I currently just got the following system for 779$ My question is should I upgrade the processor to a Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P7350 (2.0GHz) ? I heard the P series runs MUCH cooler and will extend life span (The one I have currently ordered is Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T5800 (2.0GHz))
Is this true? Is it worth the 75 bucks? I am trying to keep my cost low but if it will make a drastic difference in performance and temperature I would like some advice

Performance increase is minimal. As for the heat, I don't think it'd make much of a difference, but I've never actually compared the heat.
-
A few suggestions:
First of all, yes, I would go with a P processor.
2nd, you can use the current 30% coupon at 1000$ and it will be cheaper than your price but w/ better specs.
A higher resolution is lovely.
Stick with 1 GB of ram and buy your own stick of ram from newegg. If you are going w/ 32bit, then just buy 1x2GB stick, if you go w/ 64bit, buy 2x2GB. It will cost around 70$ for 4GB kit. It's cheaper than HP's. -
Performance wise you can check some of the available benchmarks online:
cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php
Here the P7350 is approx. 11% faster than the T5750 (didn't see the T5800).
It is also a 45nm CPU whereas the T5800 should be an older 65nm model, thus producing more heat. So yes, I would go with the P processor.
I also strongly agree with Chango99 on the higher resolution and RAM upgrade. Having two identical RAM sticks should result in a little extra performance due to Dual Channel mode. -
Um... I did use the coupon. That same setup would be 1001$ without it.
I dont care about the resolution. The default screen is fine. The 3rd gig of ram was free and the 2nd gig was standard. I also have no clue how to install laptop ram.
I basically had ot buy a new laptop cuz me alienware M766 backlight died.
I only use it to word process, travel, browse the net, and play world of Warcraft.
I am not new to gaming. Was just curious about the processor and this system.
779$ for this system seems like a steal. My alienware cost me 3500$ and was not worth it at all. 779$ for a laptop that could probably run Crysis decently... is amazing to me.
I am on a pretty tight budget. I was only going to get an Inspiron 1520 for 554.. but for a few hundred dollars I got a remarkably better machine in all respects. I just want to make sure I get the most bang for my buck.
Is the P processor going to be a DRASTIC increase in both the health of my laptop and speed of it? Or just a marginal one? -
Ram is very easy to install(just put x in slot), and 2 gigs is not standard. It starts at 1GB and they make it "free" to upgrade to 3GB as a way to reel the consumer to give them more money.
It's definitely worth it to go P7350 though. -
Hey how complex is it to install ram in this laptop? I am not a computer technician but I am also not incompetent. I installed my other laptops removeable GPU, but never saw where the ram slots where?
I am getting gigs of ram for basically 50 bucks. Not sure how much cheaper Newegg would be. -
I know installing Ram is easy, but in a laptop is a different story.
How easy is it to get to the ram in the laptop? How well is it put together? Do they use glue or only screws? How easy is it to access on this model? I put in the order already but I still have time to edit it.
I have to keep the cost at or above 999 to get the 30% off. But I dont want to go any higher then that.
Could I get 2 gigs of ram for this computer for less then 50 bucks? I don't really have that much money to be throwing around like I said. It might be cheaper but how much cheaper is the question -
Anyway, it's really easy in most cases to install RAM, the only exceptions are if it's in a difficult location such as under the keyboard where you have to remove everything to get to it. -
-
The dv5t's is easily accessible. Take off the screw, take off cover, press the 2 things holding the ram, ram pops out. Get new ram, put in slot. Snap it in. Close it. You're done!
4GB of ram costs around 70$. Look at newegg.
1x2GB stick around 30$:

2x2GB stick around 70$:

With Tax i would only be saving 10 bucks.
Its not worth it. The Free dimm of ram makes the price not so bad. Not nearly as gouging as it would be if that 3rd stick was not free.
My question is however, what advantages will I get going up to the P processor? Is it really going to be noticeable? I am on a tight budget... 75 bucks is quite a bit... but if it is really worth it (keeping in mind I am on a budget) I might swing the extra 75 bucks.
As for the scren, the default screen isn't terrible is it? I am use to 1280x1024 resolution on my desktop, and its just about that, right? -
Well, you would still be saving, just saying. Even more if you go 4GB.
Anyway, if you don't care about heat and battery life, you don't need it. The also P7350 has 1MB higher cache and 1066 MHz FSB. -
Another way to go for the processor would be to see what you could get for yours by selling in an online auction house and get a faster processor second hand like P8-T9 series which are all 45 nanometer architecture.

Core 2 Duo T9600 2800 6144 1066

Could even be cheaper than going to the P7350 from the T5800, if the warranty allows. -
So you think it will make a pretty drastic difference?
Lets say a bigger different then say going from the first P model to the one right above that one? -
Yeah, i'd agree so.
-
What about the screen?
How big a deal is that upgrade? Its 75 bucks for the + one, its a bit higher resolution -
bump , anyone else?
-
Oh man, upgrading resolution is one of the best upgrades imo. I love having all that extra space. Less scrolling and more view space, of course, everything is smaller.
-
I am just on a tight budget here =/ I am just trying to get the most bang for my buck. Are these frivolous upgrades or needed ones?
-
Technically no upgrade is needed.
You could just stick with the first config. -
I know this will play WoW
What are the chances it will play SC2/Diablo 3?
And will that processor upgrade (T to P) make a big difference? -
How long do you want this computer to last? If you are going to replace it in a year, then keep it as is. If you want it to be able to run newer software as it comes out years into the future, then consider upgrading to the better processor. I also have to stress just how easy it is to replace the ram in these machines. I did it with my dv4t which is done the same as on the 5t. You take out 1 screw and plug them in, thats it. It takes maybe 4 minutes total. Look on youtube, there are plenty of examples. Just downgrade to 1gb from HP and save a few bucks there. Also, if you are looking to the future, then get the 4gb of ram and order the 64 bit Vista. You won't regret it.
Screen resolution is a personal thing. It will not help performance only looks, so in my opinion, less important then the processor. Also there have been complaints about heat on these machines, so going with the P series to reduce heat even a little is not a bad thing. -
hi,
i would like to know if anyone has bought a dv5-1159se special edition laptop,if so please post whether it's a good purchase or not. what you like about it and not. -

I Want Vista 32 bit or 64 bit? I Was planning on formatting and installing Windows XP Pro honestly.
-
64 bit allows more ram and is future proofing you. Unless you run programs over 10 years old, 64 bit is the better option.
-
Well I play diablo 2 and stuff sometimes.
the 64 bit upgrade is free. These are both the same price
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit) -
Well yes... that's why. What's the loss of going 64 bit?
-
i guess nothing
I could dual boot with windows XP pro and Vista 64 bit right -
Guy says my thing already went to the facotry so I Can't get the different processor... am I f*cked?
Is this processor really THAT bad?!?!?!!? -
please help i am scarred.
Is this machine really not going to last more then a year!?!?! -
They said they could not change the processor it was too late.
They woudlnt let me order a new one becasue the 30% coupon might have run out.
But they did give me a 60 buck credit on my laptop.
I guess that is a decent deal. It lowers my price to 700 bucks.
Is this processor really going to screw me though?! Like I am worried here -
Dude you'll be fine! For $700 that's a great deal!
-
Ya well the people here have me worried. Like Is this going to cost me in the future? Am I screwed if I want to use this to play Diablo 3 or Starcraft 2? both processors are only 2.0ghz so i cant see the difference being catastrophic but people here had be worried
-
The CPU is fine. If the dv5t has a weakness at all then it is the GPU imo. Personally I wouldn't buy a laptop with a NVidia GPU for a long, long time. They produced a lot of defective chips in the past and still won't really admit that they screwed up.
In fact, most of your laptops heat will come from the graphics unit (especially during gaming).
But like mentioned before, this IS a sweet laptop (I'm getting one myself in the near future) so relax until you receive it and enjoy! -
Well I got a terrible laptop from alienware which cost me 3,500$
It had a Radeon 9700m, 3.2ghz p4, 1 gig of ram
So this one looks amazing but people have me kinda worried. -
-
I can buy a processor upgrade for this laptop at a later date? -
-
You will be fine with a c2d 2.0 ghz. Your gpu will is what bottlenecks you, and it will become obsolete faster than your cpu.
-
I upgraded this from a T7500, not expecting any really performance boost to my gaming environment but there was a boost and my 3DMark went up just over 600.
I know my 3Dmark isn't much, but an improvement it was never the less and if you take into account the money people spend to get a 5% or 10% increase in performance, my was that easy, I'd recommend it.
Hey I just bought a DV5T , need a suggestion
