I am a student and will need a backpack to carry books, textbooks and student stuff along with notebook and accessories to college. I travel by bus, and spend lot of hours walking or in bus and carry the backpack to my work also. What backpack would be ideal for me in this situation??
I am looking at buying SwissGear Maxxum right now. How is this backpack in use?? Would a widescreen dv6700t fit fine in this?? I also want to keep room for battery or other accessories upgrades in future...

I have a dv6500t cto. It's the same size as yours. I have the Jansport Power supply backpack. Its good. Most importantly it has a padded pocket for the laptop. It also has enough room four three 1.5" thick binders and I carry around 3 books in the other pocket. It has a special pocket for a battery or the power brick w/ cords. It does lack on smaller pockets for smaller items. I would rate this product 7 out of ten.

Do backpacks have any option of being rain-proof. Usually they extend pretty out, so umbrella cant cover them. Is there any rainproof backpack available or is there any cover available to put on backpack in rain???

You could always spray any backpack with a water/weather proofing spray.

I carry my dv6500t in a Sumdex sleeve in a North Face Vault backpack. Fits perfectly. The sleeve was 12 bucks from Ebags.com and protects from the zipper and books scratching up the notebook. You dont need to spend a lot.

i use a North Face Heckler to carry my dv9500t. its super big tho but the North Face Vault should be fine or a Bandwidth.

I used the Targus Groove in college - inexpensive, useful and pads the laptop. I would use it in combination with a notebook sleeve. The Groove has a padded compartment closest to your back so that books and other things aren't crushing it. Here - take a look:

And a good sleeve:

That's probably your best bet. I still use the Targus when I go on trips and stuff. -

Are you only considering backpacks? So no messenger bags? I used to travel a lot by bus/train to and from school, so I've had my fair share of backpacks, messenger bags, and umm briefcase type cases. For me backpacks get annoying because they put so much strain on your shoulders. I guess also it depends how much you're wanting to spend.

Between Synergy and Maxxum, what would be a better choice???
From the above videos, Synergy looks too big and protruding behind back, I am afraid of lower back pain due to improper balance.. Maxxum size looks good in video, but then it doesnt have a plastic handle and looks too soft and has cloth-like construction material.. What would you suggest between the two??? -
Do these backpacks have padded compartments for the laptop? I didn't notice one in either of the videos ... regardless of what you get, I highly recommend a padded separator. For instance, the Groove had one of these that was slightly higher in the bag and padded on the bottom and sides to protect the laptop in case you drop the bag or put it down hard. The synergy seems gigantic, but it looks like it would protect the laptop better. Again, the compartment it goes in doesn't look padded. That was my main concern in college, cuz I was rough with my bag.
