    Hi Folks,
I have a zd8000 with 2 gigs of RAM in it. When the laptop first boots up, with maybe an email client, and a browser open the laptop will go into hibernation no problems. Once the system has been used for any length of time though or when several programs are open at once then I get the very useful "Insufficient resouces exist to complete this API" message.
I've found a couple of articles on the web about this but none provide anything useful (most refer to some bug that was meant to have been fixed in XP SP 2, which I'm running).
Anybody encountered this, any ideas on how to sort this out?
It's a pain because I need to cart the laptop to meetings occasionally and I need to be up and running with a VS 2003 running as soon as possible. But instead I've to through a full boot which takes some time as this is a development machine and has a load of services, like SQL Server etc. running on it...

    Any help would be fantastic!

We had a huge debate on the issue of hibernation on this site a while back and the end result was that we decided hibernation is bad. It's not very stable and can result in serious data loss. I don't use it any longer and since speed of boot is important to you, sleep is a better alternative.

    Brian,

Is this the debate you mean?

The problem with standby is that if you forget that the machine is not turned off completely, the battery will run down. When it gets too low, Windows will try and shut down, if this fails for some reason the battery is run down to the very bottom. At least this is what has happened with previous laptops of mine and this kills Li-Ion batteries. It wasn't long before my last laptop wouldn't turn on unless it was plugged in. Also I'm not sure about moving a laptop that is only in standby mode, do you think that the risk of hard drive failure is greater if the laptop still has power going into it or will Windows correctly park the drive heads will a standby occurs?

    Phill,

I agree with Brian, hibernation should not be used. Length of time to boot is almost the exact same as a full power up, so what's the advantage? Other than your data active applications being restore at loadup, there's no other advantage. With the risk of data corruption or loss is more than enough reason to save all your data and shut the system down correctly.

I don't even like when the unit goes into Sleep or StandBy mode. I have come across a few times that the unit didn't power up correctly (just a blank screen & nothing else). But if I had to choose between hibernation and sleep/standby, I'd go the sleep/standby method.

There's an option in the Power Management settings that you can set to power down the HDD before it goes into sleep/standby mode. This way, the HDD heads will automatically park into the correct position. You can then freely move the unit without worry. There's no problem with the drive getting damaged as long as you don't pull the HDD out of the unit while in standby mode.
