Do the so-called "high capacity" batteries actually last longer than their regular counterparts?
I've debated whether or not to get the high capacity 8-cell battery for a dv9500t I'm planning to order, so I was hoping someone could tell me exactly how much longer the high capacity batter lasts.
A medium brightness and web surfing comparison of the two batteries would be nice, or at least another test with controlled variables.

Yes they are worth it and they work.
My laptop came with a 6 cell battery and it would last a little over an hour and a half playing a DVD fullscreen.
I bought a 12 cell battery and it played back the entire extended version of The Lord of the Rings DVD which is three and a half hours long.
Both of these were with maximum brightness.
Playing a DVD is one of the most power consuming things you can do on a laptop. So I figure the 12 cell will probably last 6-8 hours if I am just surfing and programming.
It's definately worth it and you can find some excellent deals on Ebay on NEW OEM batteries. I bought mine for $50 including shipping when the list price was over $100 from HP. -
I don't have a HI-Capacity battery in my pessession, but I am having almost THREE hours of surfing (uploading - downloading - messengering) on a Ordinary 8-Cell DV9500T.
Sure, Hi-Cap will last longer but not sure how much... -
I get around 3 hours on my 6 cell extended for my dv6500t.

Big difference between the 6 & 12 cells. I have both. Recently on an East to West Coast flight, I got over 4 hours off the 12 cell...
-
It's not the 6-and-12 cell difference, but more of the difference between the regular and "high capacity" versions of the same battery.

High Capacity batteries are worth it especially if you travel alot or you are a student -
What's the approximate battery life extension? 50% more battery life? Just a guess is good enough.
-
I would think another 25-30%. I got the high capacity for my 9500 and it lasts easily three hours.
-
If you can, try and check the specifications for each, and compare how many miliamp-hours/mAh (or amp-hours - Ah) each battery is rated for, that ratio will tell you how much extra juice you'd get out of the extended battery. Unfortunately it seems that HP is hiding that data, and is going to make you dig for it.

I purchased a dv9000 Pavilion Notebook in March with a capacity battery and I barely get 1 1/2 hours from the battery. I am using Vista Ultimate nad based on what I read, Vista will chew up your battery power. This week I did a battery diagnostic check and the test stated that the battery capacity is weak and the battery should be changed. I have a 3 year total care warranty so I am getting the battery replaced. I will have to do another test with the new battery to see if there is any improvement. However, I to am very unsure about these promotions on batteries and the assumed differences. Some people indicated that they observed a difference between a 6 cell and 12 cell battery. I think it is very obvious that the capacity will increase with the size of the battery. My concern is the difference between a regular 8 cell and a high capacity 8 cell. I am also searching for answers. Lastly, I think this is a topic that is being avoided by computer manufacturers and consumers are not being adequately informed.

I would avoid the high capacity 6/8 cell batteries. They will not give you that much extra life. Also, the high capacity will get hotter as they discharge.
If you want longer battery life get a 12 cell. It has more than doubled the time I can use my laptop over the 6 cell it came with. On a cost per minute usage a 6/8 cell high capacity battery is damned high compared to a 12 cell. In the long run it is cheaper to buy the 12 cell and you can find some great deals on NEW OEM 12 cell batteries on EBay. That's where I bought mine and it is fantastic for the $50 I paid including the shipping.

I have almost the same concerns a s tjj. My hi-caps barely give me over an hour and a half on my DV9000, and they are a little over a month old! And that is on performance crippling power settings and 1/2 dimmed screen.
Maybe I will take it up with HP warranty as well. If you ask me, there isn't a tinkers damn difference between the standard batteries and the hi-caps. Slapp a different label on them and charge an extra $40. Amp hour ratings are worthless if they aren't certified for such over a prescribed life.
