I've been experiencing an annoying high pitch noise coming from my dv6000t. I looked this up somewhere on notebook review and found that many other customers have been experiencing the same problem.

None of the BIOS updates or RMclock or USB power option solutions worked for me, so i contacted HP support and they're sending me a new harddrive. I need to replace it and return my old one.

I just got this new laptop in yesterday, and the high pitch noise started the second my windows got booted for the first time.

I'm really dissapointed with this.. and am considering to return the whole laptop and to go with another laptop instead. Hopefully this new harddrive is the solution.

Any comments or suggestions on this? Thanks

Have you checked CPU C4 option in BIOS ?
    This option should be disabled.

Joining in here to subscribe because I get mine day after tomorrow and will want to report as well.
What Hard Drive did you select?
A good think may be if they send you a clean install unit?

    I'll be listening.

Got mine yesterday and there is no whine or any noise. A very quiet machine I have not heard the hard drive yet. I can hardly hear the fan. I ran it for several hours in performance over battery mode all the way down to 23% of battery remaining without any anomalies.

I just bought DV6244US from Circuit City online and got the same high pitch noise, I brought back to the store for return but it will charge me 15% restock fee, so I decided to exchanged a same new one, still got the same issue.
I think the noise came from the harddrive (120GB 5400rpm from Fujisu). It will make the noise after you run the laptop for a few minutes and only when the hard drive is in the standby mode (when the HD indicator is not blink).
I contacted and told HP support online about my theory, the tech person asked me to run disk scan from the Bios (don't waste yor time on this), I did it and the report came out fine.
The HP tech person offer me the replacement of the HD, but I turned down because I think the resolve will be the same.
I'm thinking about replacing the HD with a different brand of HD, to find down if my theory is correct.
This morning I used the laptop on battery for 1/2 hour, but the high pitch noise didn't show up.
I need more time to run more test. I will upload more info whenever I have.

It's not the HD, it's a combination of things. Your laptop has capacitors to power all the devices that are in the laptop. All capacitors have oscillations they go through that produce noise on different frequencies. Usually a smart design will take this into account and design to make those frequencies above the human range of hearing. In this case and with a lot of core 2 duo setups those frequencies are dipping down into the human hearing range. You'll find that a number of things will alter/affect the production of that noise on your laptop. Turning on or off the wireless, having your HD do work, plugging in a USB device, your processor idling or being loaded. These change the noise because when those various devices draw or don't draw power they change the usage of those capacitors as the power distribution in the laptop changes. It's possible, that a HD that draws a different amount of power may produce a different result, however it is not caused by your hard drive.

FYI, I bought a HP DV2220US 2 weeks before I buy the HP DV6244US. I like the DV2220US that why I decided to get one for my nephew in Vietnam. I'm very disappointed with it, but will do my best to resolve it before I give it to my nephew.

As an electronics engineer I have to agree, but to me it seems that the nvidia card is what is making the noise. I have found this by listening to noise and moving WHITE page up and down, while the page is in transistion, the noise stops, once it settles, it resumes. Moving from white to dark backgrounds the noise subsides.

So to me, I believe the Nvidia card would also require updating

So If you change the screen brightest setting to less than 60%, will it improved the issue?

I think it really depends on the laptop. Read all the different posts on here about this and you'll find solutions that are all over the place. Some people find that plugging in USB fixes it, some find that turning off USB sleep mode will do it, others say running HLT commands do it, others will fix it by turning wireless on or off, yadda yadda yadda..... basically what it amounts to is that certain combinations of power draw produce audible oscillations. Hopefully you can find something that minimizes it on your laptop whatever it may be.

High pitched noise is due to oscillating capacitors. Capacitors are designed to be inaudible by humans under certain operating conditions. Since laptops use various power settings, they can and do operate in and out of these ranges, and often, we hear them.

Some people don't experience the problem. Reason it's like this is because HPs manufacturer (Quanta) doesn't use the same exact parts to produce their motherboards. They use whatever supplier can get them the cheapest parts in the volume they need, so different laptops ship with different capacitors. My DV6305 was loud. The DV6000Z that HP replaced it with was quieter. Both have identical motherboards.

If you are annoyed by it, return it. If it comes to the point where you can't get a quiet HP, ask for a refund. Make sure you tell them why they lost you as a customer too. I truly believe HP and others could fix this minor issue with a bit of time and effort.

I think we talking about two different issues, i'm not talking about constant whining that is coused by capacitors, i am aware of that fackt and my dv6530ew is free of that issue, but i have a different problem. I'm not getting constant nosie, instead i'm getting a 1 second bleep!! coming from hard drive and it bleeps in completely random times and situations.

    Did anyone solve this problem?
