Just a quicky really - is it worth now or for the future in my case (for HP 8510p) to get a 3GB instead of 1.5GB version of this nice drive??

Is it still the best drive performance wise??

    THANKS!

PS. I did not open my HP to get to its HDD yet so is it hard to change it?? Do I need anything apart from screwdriver??

Confused, by the question since the 7K200's come in 160 and 200 GB sizes with 16 mb cache. Awesome drive very quick. Are you referring to SATA 150?? verus SATAII??

Most laptops drives are easy to change. It involves removing the HDD, unscrewing the drive, screwing in new drive, and replacing the tray. At this point you'd need to take care of the OS, either by clean install or Ghosting it in.

Yup, I put in the exact same drive. I'll put up the exact instructions if you want, but it's basically: take off cover, remove old HD, put in new HD, close cover, and install XP. Okay I guess I did give you pretty much the exact instructions. It's really that easy. Okay, the XP install was a pain until I figured out the sound thing. Drive guard is a program you can install that turns off the HD when it senses a sudden drop. Unless you're referring to the metal case which protects the HD.

The Hitachi 7k line is great if you want a little more boost in your application load times and such.

No, just remove the screws. Make sure you touch a piece of metal before you start to get the static electricity off of you.

Why 300 -- the transfer rate still won't exceed the 150 mbits / second rate...

All the HP laptops are only SATA150, if you buy a SATA300 HDD it will only run at the SATA150 speed. So it would be a waste of money.

In a word, "no." The sustainable tranfer rate on the 7200 prm drives will not exceed 150 mbits / second. E-sata just is an interface -- the speed will not exceed 150 mbis / second with E-sata either with the 7200 rpm drives.

That's not entirely true, only in this situation where the computer can only handle SATA150. 7200RPM drives can reach a rate of 300 mbits/second, but only where the destination hardware is capable of that transfer rate. Otherwise, why in the hell would they create SATA300 7200RPM Drives?
