now i could be wrong and maybe i just some how purchased the wrong drive or got a lemon out the deal, but this drive does not out perform my samsung 160 GB's.... so i think i will be returning this tomorrow.
and here are some of my findings....

i also did a file transfer of a 5 gig file between both drives and they performed just about identically. about 1 seconded off.
both drives did 208 mbps (21.5MB's)through a 1 gig network port.
so...did i get a lemon or is this a true test....
ran call of duty 4 and no change in performance.
ran both drives as master and slave. with the same performance.
the 72k200 did run cooler though.
did a virus scan using AVG and scanned for 10 seconds and the samsung beat it by about 15 files. drives we're cloned so they are identical for my test.
booting vista was identical as well
and my score dropped from 5.4 to 5.3
so as far as i can tell...i think ill keep my 5400's for the time being.

It will not change the gaming performance at all (should have known that
)...try using HDtune to bench mark it.

ar...damn filter...
I see now, well the seek the is the obvious difference which is what I would expect. The temp drop look significant too. But I am surprised that the rea/write speed aren't much different... -
exactly!..this drive is suppose to smoke all 5400's...but apparently not.
and heat is not a problem for me.
3 ms i can live with
and i have plenty of disk space already.
so i think ill keep my 180.00 bucks and take this back.
sure was worth a shot though. -

7200RPM drives give you faster access times, which yours did, but their lower platter density hurts streaming throughput. I'm surprised it hurt THAT much though. Boot times ought to be a bit faster with the Hitachi, anything that requires accessing lots of little files, but otherwise if I have a 5400RPM drive I generally don't bother upgrading it. I did replace my last dead HD with a Hitachi 7200RPM drive, the much cheaper 120GB model.
-
well...you be the judge.....
considering it's a 7200 rpm / 16 meg cache. imho, it should not be that close. and the samsung beat the hitachi drive in just about every test, cept for the 8 meg. i dont know what to make of that one there.
i would like to see test from other members who have a travelstar 7k200 and their older drive. preferably a 5400 drive. name and model number. -
Very strange.

Both suggest that the 7k200 should blow away a 5400 rpm. -

Here's one with a Samsung 5400 rpm that has 250GB capacity:

now it would seem we need a few more people with the exact same drive as mine. so we can get to the bottom of things. i did these test on both 32 and 64 bit platforms. everything stay pretty much the same. -
run "Benchmark" and not "File benchmark".

Your Samsung score might not be a fluke. Here's someone with your drive:

My default Fujitsu 250 GB HD is giving me a score of 5.1 on WEI!

page one top of page... i did run benchmark. -
anyone else with input on this drive????
-
I got one DOA... complete failure after only a few days. However, when I get the replacement I'll run a test against my Seagate Momentus 5400rpm (120GB) and post the results. I'll most likely end up selling the Hitachi or returning it... I was really unimpressed with the loudness (MUCH louder than my 5400rpm stock Seagate). Noise is a big factor with me... we'll see.

Thanks for the input Ardroth.
now that im back to running both samsung drives, my network transfers jumped up to over 750 mbps or 78Mb data transfer (max) and on wireless N they jumped up to 55 mbps. -
bump......
