My father has a Compaq he purchased 2 years back, and it uses a Turion Ml-34 (single-core), which I believe uses socket S1, is it possible to upgrade to any of the older Turion Dual core cpu's or would the laptop be incompatible? The model number is V5000.

The Turion ML does not use socket S1, it uses Socket 754 and there are no dual core cpu's for socket 754. You are stuck with upgrading the cpu to another ML or MT series Turion.
