My "landlord" as it stands (I'm boarding while going to school) bought a laptop today for the cheap. But it appears to be unable to recognize it's own dvd drive. The model is a dx6500 Pavilion. Any ideas where I can find a driver or what else might be wrong?

Bump, no ideas? It doesn't even show under device manager, whether as a DVD drive or an unidentified device. Hell, there isnt even a section for optical drives in this things device manager *** much?

dv6500... AMD or Intel? Vista I assume? Odds are the DVD drive is broken, they do have a fairly high failure rate. Swapping in a new one is trivial, get the service guide from hp.com and pick one of the better rated slimline drives from Newegg.
Other than that, everything else works? Wireless, etc?
Oh, see if a bootable CD or DVD will work to rule out a Windows issue.
BTW, if the notebook has a NVIDIA graphics chip (all AMD versions and some Intel) make sure a recent BIOS revision that runs the fan 24x7 has been flashed in. NVIDIA chips are prone to thermal failure.
Hiya, need drivers apparently.
