One of the HP laptops on this home network lost its connectivity to the net after a start up last night, as well as to one and other. We tried to open Network Sharing Centre but it wouldn't open and when we tried to connect to a network it states “Windows cannot find any network' but I'm on it now, as well that laptop cannot access its Control Panel.

We are able to connect to the net by way of a lan cable to one of the port on the router.

We did a search and found articles that dealt with this issue where some have resolved the problem by reinstalling the bios, others by reinstalling the Intel PRO/Wireless Drivers for Microsoft Windows Vista or Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver for Microsoft Windows Vista or Realtek RTL8101 Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0) Driver, so we did the lot to cover all bases but still no joy?

If anyone who has dealt with a similar issue has a solution, your input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your help and or interest.

If your router is G and your laptop wireless card is N, then I would suggest to you to try setting your wireless card to B and G mode (in its properties). I have a problem with my laptop losing connection to my router, especially when I connect to another network elsewhere, went on the netgear forums (my router is netgear), asked around and thats what was suggested. Works pretty good now. I hope it can help you.

If you cannot access Windows Control Panel or Network Sharing you have a OS problem or a virus. I would address that problem first by trying to do a repair or reinstall the OS before I became concerned about the network issues.

I would also suggest you perform an error check of your harddrive through My Computer.

You may want to check your harddrive for errors. In case you don't know how here are some instructions I posted for another person yesterday:

Check your harddrive volume for errors and automatically try to fix them if they are found:
    - Left click on Start, My Computer
    - Right click on Local Disk C:
    - Left click on properties
    - Left click on tools
    - Run the Error-checking routine: This option will check the volume for errors
check both boxes and reboot the computer to check the drive. This will probably take some time (could take a couple of hours or longer) be patient.

Sounds to me like your windows install has become corrupt. If you can't access your control panel then you have more serious issues than just a wireless connection problem.

Now might be a good time to format and do a fresh install of the O.S. to fix any of these issues. As well, you should consider running CHKDSK and SCANDISK to fix any errors on the HDD before you do the format and install.

After doing the fresh install you should also install Adaware, an Antivurs like AVG, and Spyware Blaster which blocks malicious web sites from being loaded in the browser. These three programs should be run once a month to keep your system in tip-top shape.

Did you install any new software or devices recently? Do you make any significant changes to your router? virus scanner software? firewall? networking equipment like router settings etc....

Does your Trend Micro have a recent definition?

Come to think of it we did run the Eusing Registry Cleaner the day before and he got over 15000 repairs and I use it all the time and get like 80ish.

    Any thoughts?

Yes, make it easy on yourself. Backup your data and try first to repair the O.S., if it doesn't work re-install it. If you have to use the restore disks I hope you made, so be it.

I am sure you accidently deleted something you shouldn't have when running the Reg Cleaner. I wouldn't even try to correct that issue as you could be chasing your tail 'so to speak'.

At this point it would be easy to say that it was the reg cleaner that cause this issue, but I still have doubts because it seems to be coincidental that some of the things that are effecting that laptop are stopping us from doing a restore.
Which if you've ever had a virus before you'd know that's their Modus operandi, like the restore some how has been disable (not in accessories) and the only place you can enable it again is in Systems in the Control Panel
If some of the registry had been deleted or corrupted once the laptop had been rebooted these issue would of arisen one would think? I'd find it unlikely that the operator of that laptop who uses it 14+/24 would of went 14 hours + with a reboot knowing him (I could be wrong, but I don't want to jump to conclusions)
The many reason I want to be sure of the problem before going ahead is if I believe it's a registry issue and transfer file from their computer to another to do a recovery. I risk infecting another computer.
Is there any software available to scan the registry that identifies missing or damaged entries with out trying to fix them?

Reinstall the O.S. If you use a Reg cleaner, use CCleaner. It's the only one I know of that is fairly reliable and it also gives you the option of backing up before making repairs. Use that option always.

yes, I keep saying this, because this is what it's going to come down to anyway. Do yourself a favor and skip trying to fix the issue and do the install. You'll save yourself a big headache.
