    Horrible vertical viewing angles

    This is the first screen they replace, and I got a CMO1514.

    Colors and brightness are much better compared to SEC, but vertical viewing angles are something killing. I get eyes strain after a while.

    Also horizontal viewing angles are not that good.

    After 3-4 hours sitting in front of the screen I get eye strain and a bit of headache.

    Does somebody ever experienced the same with CMO screens? Do you have same vertical viewing angles issues?

    I'm thinking about a second replacement but I don't know whether HP would install a better screen.

    Laptop is a nc8430 with 15.4" WXGA LCD panel (1280x800).

    AUO is similar to what you're describing for CMO. At first I was disappointed when my 3rd laptop from HP arrived with an SEC screen, but after using it for a couple days, I realized that I'll gladly take the hit in brightness for its much better viewing angle, both horizontal and vertical. I don't think I ever got the kind of eye strain or headaches you are talking about though. Is this your first notebook?

    Many ASUS displays are CMO,my bro's W3J's display also has CMO nothing wrong with the angles.I suppose it depends on the type and price of the said display.

    hmmm if its what ur talkin about then ive checked the device manager and my dv9000t has a SEC. its got real good viewing angles and yeah the brightness aint that gr8. but ive noticed the viewing angles in movies isnt as good either however normal desktop viewing its fine

    I'm thinking to ask HP to replace this screen with a WSXGA one, paying obviously a price different. Do you think this could be done?

    In most cases they won't do something like this, I have found through personal experience. If you are still within the 21 day HP return window or the 180 day Costco one, then your best option is to return and re-buy.

    I bought from a Store in mid January, don't know if what you are saying will apply. This store (based in Italy) has like all the italian store a 10days return policy, after that you cannot return anymore the product.

    Does HP return window ovveride this?

    No, unfortunately the HP return window applies to CTO and pre-configured computers ordered directly from hpshopping.com.

    Ok, so I found only two possible solutions other than keeping the laptop and adapting myself to the screen and resolution:

    - Order and install by myself the WSXGA screen as spare part from a spare part retailer, it will cost around 650 euro, then I should try to sell my actual screen as spare part for 200/300 euro, but I doubt anyone will be interested. This will void the warranty I think.

    - Sell the laptop and buy another one with WSXGA, a loss of 150/200 euro is expected (I spent 1040 euro for it)

    I should have tried the notebook before buying it but here in Ireland I'm unable to find a decent PC shop (they all sell old models at crazy prices).

    If I were you, I will try talking to a HP engineer first about replacing the screen. I don't think buying the screen and replacing it yourself will be a good idea because:
    1) You risk breaking or scratching the top assembly plastic or connectors.
    2) You may get a screen with dead pixels at which point is very difficult to ask for another screen. HP may use a 3rd party parts importer which have their own return policies depending on your country.
    3) Like you said, you'll be left with the entire top lid + WXGA screen, which may not be highly sought after considering this is such a new model.

    If a HP service centre performs the repair, you have the option to let them know you're not satisfied with the replacement part and they usually try to accomodate you the best they can. Don't nc8430s come with onsite warranty? If so, utilise it or go down to the service centre because showing them the problem helps.

    Problems like yours may take some time to resolve and I'm speaking from my experience. If you do not wish to wait, the quickest way will be to sell it off and buy something else. You lose money, but you save time, effort and stresss.
