Hello,
I have the following dinosaur. The HDD is crashing and it is getting really old, so I am considering getting rid of it. Here are the specs:
Compaq Presario 1700
- Pentium III 1.0 Ghz
- 256MB RAM
- 20GB HDD
- Windows XP Professional SP2
Defects:
Half a year ago the HDD started making the "click-click-click-click" sound. Even though it is not yet dead it does lock up very frequently (every 5 minutes or so) and takes many cycles of "click-click-click-click" to come back to life. Do you guys think I can sell it for a little more if I replaced the HDD with a new one of the same capacity?
Another thing happens often and I'm not sure it is directly related to my crashing HDD: sometimes during something as harmless as browsing the Internet with Firefox or Opera, the screen will just turn off. The Power button is still lit so initially I thought the computer was still on and this was just a screen issue. However one time I was listening to music and with the screen turning off the music stopped playing too. This is weird and the only thing there is to do is to restart the computer by pressing the power button.
The ethernet port is broken and I'm using a PCMCIA adaptor which I think I will include in the sale.
Oh and did I say this thing is old? No? Well this thing is old.
Thanks for any inputs.

A quick search of eBay suggests that a fully working Presario 1700 might fetch $200, give or take, so... how much is your time worth to you? You can probably find a used HD for dirt cheap and see if an OS reload fixes things, I wouldn't be surprised if that's all it needs. I'd be inclined to sell it as-is and let someone who can't afford an E1705 play with it.

it's probably not worth it to get a new one just to sell it
i think $150 may be a little too high. there are P3 on ebay for $44-66...
and p4 for $150
these are not including shipping, but there are a lot of things wrong with that desktop... -
i say if you can get ur hands on a hdd put it in and give it to someone that wants a computer but doesnt have one. christmass is comming up u know, all be it, it wouldnt be the perfect computer for a present but for someone that doesnt have one that would be cool.

Okay, thanks for your inputs guys. I think I will probably sell it for around 100-120, depending on if I can find a cheap HDD.
Regarding my weird screen behavior: has anyone experienced anything like that? -
How Much is this Worth?
