How are Envy 14 owners finding the viewing angles of the display? I know the brightness is touted as ~300 nits and the colour gamut is ~82%, but how to you find the image holds up to viewing from above and the side?

My old macbook pro had excellent viewing angles and I've found the displays on most other laptops are really lacking in this regard.

From the reviews and what current owners have said, the viewing angles should be excellent, up to 10 feet to the side.

I've been hearing mixed things. Just from attempting to wade through the owner's thread, there seem to be some people impressed by the brightness and colour, but disappointed by the viewing angles.

The viewing angles are some of the worst I've ever seen on a laptop.

By viewing angle we mean angle from which the colors of the screen start to wash and contrast to go nuts, not angle from which you start seeing reflections from the glossy finish. In erathostenes review video the viewing angles seemed excellent tho.

Yeah, that's what I mean by viewing angle. I accept that reflections are going to be horrific on any glossy screen.

Didn't you return yours because of the messed up optical drive?

Didn't return it yet, still trying to see if I can bend it back straight. I was able to help it a little so far. I just don't want to go through the trouble of waiting another month or so for the refund and wait for another one to come.

I like privacy so a narrower viewing angle is better for me. If I wanted to share I'd used a TV.

You don't have to wait that long. If you get an RMA and opt for an exchange, as soon as you deliver it to Fed-Ex and it gets put in the system as shipped, they start building your new unit.

I can tell you that this LCD is TN based. Due to this no matter how good the screen is, viewing angles will be limited and you will see color shifting.

It's not perfect by any means, but it's better than almost anything you'll find in your local Best Buy.

yeah, i put it up against a vaio-sr and a macbook air and the envy was way better

angle wise....maybe similar range? its just that its so bloody pink whereas other TN panels aren't so crazy in the color shift

That's disappointing. The screen is the main thing that sets this computer apart from other laptops and, to some extent, is the only thing to really make up for its shortcomings (underclocked gpu, bad trackpad, etc.)

i wouldnt say the trackpad is bad, its about as good as you'll get from any synaptics (er, non-mac) trackpad

    synaptics drivers suck!

eg. if you tap and drag on the vertical scroll bar, going up and down the page is smooth as long as your finger is in contact with it.

but if you try to 2 finger scroll, its choppy

it's not a sensitvity issue, it clearly by the previous example knows when your finger is pressed against it.....its just got shoddy, poorly made drivers for the scrolling

and im not even going to get into the other non-basic, multi touch features synaptics sucks at

I think many people feel the trackpad would be better if they didn't try to (poorly) imitate the Macbook Pro. Having used the touchpads on previous Envys, the lack of true buttons is annoying and so is the fact that the whole surface is touch sensitive.

The Synaptics touchpad on my lenovo y460 is fantastic, with excellent side scrolling and two real, dedicated buttons. (Not to mention the GPU is clocked at normal speeds.)

I just was at BestBuy and took a look at the biggest macbook pro there....wow, the display on that thing is awesome. I'd love to see a side-by-side of it with the Envy

Based on what I saw though, the viewing angles on the MBP was 10x better; brightness and color gamut was also good but it's so bright in BB that it's hard to tell for sure

The viewing angles on my 3 year old matte mbp were fantastic. It was expensive as though.

I'm planing to do a comparison video (woth my freakin awesome canon t2i dslr!! In crazy sexy 1080p!!) once I get mine in.

My sister has a 15" 2010 MBP and I'm pretty sure the screens are the same on all MBP models.

No problem! I'm kinda wondering myself how it stacks up against the MBP.

And yea I'm gonna cover anything I can think of as far as physical-ness goes. From angles to DVD rom noise to flex to hinge strength to USB tightness to weight to trackpad to the e2e etc...

And then I'll perform a drop test from various heights onto concrete and jagged rocks and then jello (strawberry) and a coffee sumerge test.. Well see who has better build... Mmmmuuuaahahahahahahah!!!

But really, I'm excited to do the video. I actually think it might do well vs. The mbp.
