I've been looking at laptops like the HDX and the DV4T, and all these HP laptops have good specs for around $1100, but I've heard that some of them can heat up pretty bad. Is the average battery life for these laptops also okay? I see Macbooks getting 4-5 hours of battery and hear that Dell can get around the same, but I also like the powerful specs of the HP, but do these same specs sacrifice a lot of battery?

Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
Forget Dell

I can only recommend Dell since all the other companies have sucky support ...
-
From Dell owner here : HP seems have a better build quality and less problems from the new dells (talking about the studios).
-
usually u get better build quality from an HP and the support is way better in my opinion
I own a HP Desktop and just order an HP Laptop -
If you are going for Dell, studio versions are really unpopular here because of its numerous problem.
But with HP, laptops are good but service is not upto the mark. -
I want to order a HDX18 but it seems if you get a laptop with problems....you are screwed and you'll have problems continuously.
-
yeah service with HP is kinda shaky
sometimes you will get awesome service, sometimes you will get awful service
but the laptops are pretty solid
mines running fine and i abuse it a lot -
Just forget Dell and HP....You will be happy with Compaq
-
they're fun and full of deliciousness

From my experience - and I've been an HP customer for more than 10 years - HP produces outstanding systems at a reasonable price. The value is unmatched. However, the service could be problematic at times but that's only when dealing with overseas. When dealing with North American service it is great and they're very knowledgeable/helpful. I've also dealt with Dell as I've ordered Dell laptops in the past. I can only say my preference is with HP. I don't rely on customer service that much so I'm a happy customer.

Don't buy crap like HP. I tried my friend's dv7/dv5 and couldn't use its firewire for my audio interface xD
And the heat and fan noise, poor LCD, No XP drivers, various integrated devices which kill the resources and so on.
Love my father's Studio 15 -

im curious about this too. just pick ur poison. I personally think that ALL laptops somwehat degraded in quality the past 3 years. ( especially most models are coming from china ). A good warranty & customer service support should be the deal maker for you. goodluck !

My Compaq Presario 1525us has been a pretty solid notebook since 2001 (or 2000, I forget). I semi-retired it in 2006 and later bought a Dell XPS 1530 as a replacement. Never had to use HP's tech support over the phone or chat, but I have used their forums before which was OK as I needed battery and drivers information. Some of the components inside the Presario notebook components are pretty flimsy...but I think this can be said for many notebooks out there TODAY. The touchpad for the Compaq notebook had been a joy to use and EXTREMELY accurate without being sensitive while typing (partially due to fact that it was not flushed with palm rest like today's laptop designs so you can't touch it easily). I don't think my Dell XPS can say the same, but after the BIOS modification it's a much better touchpad than original release. I have used Dell's CHAT support for a battery replacement. They asked a few more questions than I thought necessary (I didn't know that I requested a battery replacement on the last day of the battery warranty... the battery died the evening before but I didn't even think my battery was about to be out of warranty so didn't bother to check until I was chatting with them), but otherwise, they were very friendly and were quick to replace my battery afterwards.

I think if you buy a business class HP you will be happy , the consumer line is not as well built and the service seems to be bad . Business class hp 8510-p I have is built very well and the 2 times I needed help service rep was very helpful . even called me back 2 days later to make sure all was still working .
You get what you pay for , comes with 3 year warranty , W line 3 year on site repair . -
I have 3 HP laptops and a desktop, a Dell XPS m1530, an Asus netbook and a Gateway desktop. HP is okay. Once had a problem with a new Compaq and they replaced it with an HP equivalent. No manufacturer is immune to bad support experiences. HP built sometimes feels 'plasticky' but it's a solid machine. You can buy the business line but you have to pay dearly in addition to a slower CPU and mostly runs on XP. My advice... actually go and see one.

Build quality is as good as it gets for laptops ,and service is very good . -
I heard that Compaq series laptop does not support Windows XP.
Is it true or is a some kind of tactics to promote Windows Vista? -
Like I said the business line is EXPENSIVE compared to the consumer line of laptops even with the same CPU! It might be because of the increased warranty service. I guess companies figure if you buy the business line of products you can afford these extras since they figure you're a business man. Quality is good but not worth the extra $$$. For us ordinary folks the consumer line is fine.

RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
Up until my asus everyone in the family used HP and Compaq Desktops and Laptops as well as a few friends.
My F700 series Compaq was a Quanta based unit not sure about the rest of the units in the family. Desktops are more off the shelf with the cases being the only thing really contracted out.
How are HP laptops?
