The HP Compaq 2230s is a 12.1" notebook at dimensions of 13.3 x 9.7 x 1.21”. How is it possible that with those sizes, it's still bigger than the 13.3" Macbook (for example) at 12.78 x 8.92 x 1.08"?
I can't see either notebooks in front of me so I'm trying hard to visualize how it's possible.
EDIT: to be more precise, how can it be wider than even a 13.3" notebook?

its because the HP is a business notebook correct? The dimensions will be bigger overall of course because it needs that thicker material/build to withstand damage.

Take the netbooks for example. Some of them are 8.9 inch screens in a frame large enough for 10" inch screens. They just have a wider/larger bezel. -
Sometimes lower quality or cheaper notebooks have more plastic, bigger bezels etc. Although its hard to believe that a Macbook (one of the bigger and heavier 13" laptops with a big bezel) is smaller than 12" laptop.

Ive had a few macs and a few pcs and mac has always been true to the dimensions. PC not so much. its not uncommon at all to see a 14 inch screen in a 15 inch chasses. my 13 inch black macbook is basically smaller then the 12 inch asus in my sig.

the dimensions are 11.6 x 8.9 x 1.1 for the 2230s
How can a 12.1"-er notebook still be bigger than a 13.3" in size?
