    Hi there.

    I bought this Compaq laptop earlier this year, a V3758TU model, 2.2ghz, 1gb ram, running on a X3100 graphics card, and on Windows XP. All was well with it, except the fact that whenever I play 3D games, it'll be smooth for a while, then I randomly get a lag spike. I'm playing it when the power supply's plugged in.

    I could play Serious Sam at a smooth 60fps on it, but every few minutes, it lags to 20fps for 8 seconds or so, before being smooth again. It happens to every other 3D games that I play. I tried running them in windowed mode, run CPU-Z on the side, and noticed that the processor speed reduces to 1.1ghz (from 2.2ghz) whenever the lag spike happen.

    The same lag spike happens when I view youtube videos, apparently. Every few minutes, the video will lag. I didn't have this problem when playing video files normally though, it just happens when I view youtube videos on their site for some reason.

    I already installed the latest video card drivers for it, and the startup BIOS doesn't seem to have any related options that says "I want this computer to run at full speed all the time". Help, anyone? ;_;

    It sounds more like driver issues or an OS issue to me. Speedstep is supposed to monitor demand and adjust accordingly. Did you check to see if your computer is running too hot occasionally? Are all your other drivers updated? If you have XP, did you apply the dual-core hotfix or install SP3?

    If you disable speedstep, you might run at the minimum and not maximum clock frequency. I recommend changing your power setting to "Always ON" or "Performance Mode" for XP and/or Vista.

    Also, what are your full system specs?

    Nah, my laptop is plugged into a fan cooler most of the time. It's rather cool, with warm air flowing out of the fan when doing things like playing games, or watching HD movies. I didn't knew about the dual-core hotfix, I'll go look up for it. Thanks

    My laptop is already at "always on" mode. How do I post my full specs? I don't really know much of it, apart from being a Core2Duo T7500 model @ 2.2GHZ, with 1gb of RAM.

    1GB of RAM ==> Try 2+GB. It could be that you don't have enough RAM for your needs, and that you are hitting the pagefile a lot. That definitely slows things down.
