I have a v5310us Compaq laptop and I need to take the hard drive out of it to keep before sending off the computer. Can anybody run me through the process on how best to do this? Thanks!

Read the service manual. From the HP downloads page for your notebook, click the Manuals link on the left-hand side.

Short answer: unplug, remove the battery, open the HD access hatch on the bottom of the notebook, and you should see what to do from there.
