where is the sound coming from? The speakers or inside the laptop?

i think the sound is coming from inside the laptop. i called hp and we reinstalled the sound drivers and it didn't work. hp guy told me to return the laptop but i don't want to if i don't have to.

First try uninstalling the audio drivers and then reinstall them, I had this same issue, but with a Sony Vaio CR. You said it is coming from the inside? Is it always when opened, or just when you close the lid?

it seems like it's coming from inside the comp, i thik it's the cpu. when it's closed i think it's not as loud.

I should note, from here on, i'm a little drunk and my typing is becoming more difficult.

I have been doing extensive research as I have an HP dv5 with a high pitch. Observations and attempted fixes up to this point
    1) noise only happens when notebook lid is closed, and computer is in sleep mode.
    2) noise does not happen when notebook goes into hibernate mode, lending credibility to the idea that it's a CPU thing
    3) noise changes between 2 pitches (1 is high, the other is higher) that coincides to timing of the power light on the front flashing
    4) i tired to the the RightMark CPU trick, but the option for "run HLT command" was always greyed out, no matter what options i selected. and this was AFTER finding the 64bit driver signature, etc.

I like the fact that the computer wakes up very quickly from sleep mode, but the high-pitched whine does get pretty annoying. I don't hear the noise when the computer is on. Additional suggestions, pointers are definitely appreciated.

I've had this problem with my DV7 and it's the fan. I believe you can adjust the fan settings in the BIOS.

Also, and check and see if it is comming from the Hard Drive. Should be located right under your left palm on the laptop. Mie makes noises such as what you have explained. High pitches, when the hard drive is accessing files and such, in a quite room, that all i can hear. Might be a drive issue. .or just might be how loud the drive is...
