Is this attached to the bottom/back of the laptop? I see it weighs about a pound, but I'm wondering how it effects the form factor, and how much extra life you get out of it?

Yes it is attached to the bottom of the notebook. There is a slot that the battery can plug into on the bottom.

from that thread you can see the 8510p, the slot is not the long one (dock slot) but one with the sliding cover directly next to it.

OK, so it's going to add a lot of volume to the laptop (I'm considering the 8730w, which is already fairly good sized)

Is it the same ammount of cells but the high capacity one or the extended one. The high capacity one is the same size with bigger cells vs the extended battery will stick out the bottom at least on my dv6500t it does im not sure about the 8730w
