    HP Pavilion 14.1" Intel Dual-Core T2370 1.73GHz Laptop (DV2804CA)

    250GB
    3GB DDR2
    Intel X3100

    For $750.

I don't plan on doing any gaming. Will that be fine for school stuff and movies/music??

The cpu isn't the best, but I assume it'll still be a big increase over my current p4. Will it handle vista and what I want to do okay??

yeah, it should do fine. make sure you remove all the junk software HP installs by default and you should have a pretty speedy system even with Vista. A clean install would also do wonders. But, the basic spec should be fine for school and regular stuff and definately an improvement over the P4.

you should have no problem. i have heard that vista (not currently running it, don't plan to) is a huge memory hog, and if you can 4gb would be a worthwhile investment (but only if its a $50 increase. if its $100 extra, don't bother). however, most recommendations i have seen say at least 2gb, so 3gb should get you through mostly anything you desire.

Will I be able to do a clean install disks my laptop comes with? Wouldn't that reinstall all the HP crap?

Can I not just manually uninstall all the crap?

Also I can't upgrade anything, because it's from futureshop. If I could, I'd probably get a better cpu before more ram. I'm only getting it from futureshop because I have a lot of store credit I need to use.

The prebuilt models don't usually come with recovery discs, as they prompt you to make your own. Even then, the discs reinstall the bloatware.

Yeah 2 is good. 3 is even better. 4 is useless unless you plan to use 64bit Vista!

    I just realised that the cpu isn't a c2d...

Would it be worth spending $100 more for a T5550??

Also is VGA the standard monitor plug?

The lower end C2D's are just renamed as the Pentium Dual core. The PDC has the same core as the C2D but since they are sold as budget processors have 1MB L2 cache and run on a 533MHz bus. Unless you need a specific technology like the Virtualization support which is disabled in the PDC's it wont be worth while to spend $100 more just for the T5550(1.83GHz/2MB L2 cache/667MHz bus).
