While my dv7t is in production, I'm buying accessories. I already have my cheapo mouse.Thinking of picking up a headset, but if the mic is good enough, I can just buy a cheap set of headphones, and the money I save allows me to go buy Starcraft 2 (finally). Otherwise I can just buy a good headset where I can talk softly into a mic rather than talk out loud/yell at my laptop and disturb my roommate.

Speaking as a businessman who has been through many, many video/conference calls, the guy, on the other end of the mic, might appreciate that decent headset, rather than listening to the combination of your raised voice and background noise. Your roomate as well.

Starcraft 2 can wait then. College starting anyway, less of a distraction.

Think I'll pick up a headset ($35?), then a cheap pair of headphones for other junk.

It's passable for VOIP while playing video games, but there's no noise cancellation or anything fancy like that.

no no the mic is really good. it picks up sound very well and the voice doesnt sound drowned out or anything. get the cheap headset and buy starcraft 2 (because its amazing). if sound is coming through your headset, there will be no problems with sound coming through the mic.

no its really not that bad

compared to a headset with a microphone 4 inches from your face, yeah, it's not going to be as good

but for a standalone microphone thats 4-5 feet away from you built into a 4 centimeter display, it picks up my voice very well and it sounds like im right next to it

I don't know what kind of mics you are used to? But yes it is pretty bad.

You don't judge a mic by how it sounds 4-5 feet away. This mic sounds bad at any distance anyway.

I use ventrilo all the time and when I test it, it sounds loud and clear. Granted if I have music playing through the speakers, the microphone is going to pick it up, but the quality is good and it picks up my voice very well.

Maybe you got a ty microphone or something...lol

Anyone have any suggestions for a headset with a detachable/hideaway mic, or headphones with a in-line mic? Cheap as possible. the guys in the accessories part recommend $40+ equipment and it's really not that serious...

If the Dv76 has different mics than the Dv6z's, then I could understand what they're saying but if its the same, then something is wrong. The mics on this hp are the best i've ever heard. Skype voip soundslike the person is sitting in front of you. No delay, no cutoffs, no feed back, no static. Helluva lot better than a land line or my 600.00 cell. amazing...

As for a cheap headset, the usb logitech is frequently on sale at newegg for 20 something and sounds great.

Ever just consider of using a bluetooth earpeice and calling it a day? Might work/sound better, IMO. There are some good ones out there that aren't really all that expensive.

    my mic is very good
i can speak very softly far away and still, it sounds clear

but it all goes to sh*t when i start typing.

    it picks up everything @@

it's a no-go if you wanna use it to play games (ie. ventrilo)

it's pretty sensitive, yeah. but depending on how hard you mash down the keys or if you use a seperate keyboard when you play games like I do, it's easy to overcome.

When I tried out a dv6 quad before I returned it, the keyboard seemed pretty quiet. I'm a two finger speed typing kind of guy,so my typing can be pretty noisy, but I don't think it will be too much of a problem.
