    Good afternoon lady's and gentlemen

I am considering buying a laptop and well my choice now is between a Packard bell and HP laptop.

I have heard bad stuff about HP laptops such as that they are crap and easily overheat due to the fan on certain models being placed under the laptop.

So my question is how happy are you with your laptop ? Have you had any problems such as overheating sudden crashes etc?

    Thank you !

    Henrik

Okay, but windows7 is so-so, i had a couple of total crashes that wouldn't happen in XP.
About HP they have not enough choices to small countries, so i went with a laptop that wasn't my first choice.

Best thing to do is research research research. Every manufacturer has good and bad models. And every model has some units that ship out bad. What I recommend is do your research on these forums to see if there is any blatant design issues, cooling etc.. For example, if you were interested in the Alienware M11X, you would see in the dell forum that model has huge systemic issues with the hinges. So much it screws up the displays and its happening to a large population of owners.. Even Dell is admitting to the issue and its takes allot for them to admit to anything.

Be aware of user complaints about their laptops being hot.. heat is your worst enemy with notebooks and you want to avoid these models. Buy online and victoriously test your machine during that first 3 to 4 weeks when you can still send it back for full refund. Do not ever send back a machine during this period for repair/rework.. Reworking a laptop can cause even more problems and the reworking might damage/scratch device. Believe me, these machines assemble allot easier then they are "taken apart". What you are shooting for is a machine that is assembled right the first time and appears to be fully functional during that first 3 weeks of ownership. If not, send back for a replacement. If they send back a refurbished model, which they sometimes do when they are not supposed to, then just cancel and refund order.

I am afraid there are no companies that are really much better then others when it comes to the home line of notebooks. They are all built in China and every manufacture has some models which are just plain problematic. Only research can uncover some of these models. But be aware if you buy a "new model" that has not been out long. Sometimes it takes some months or a year for serious issues to appear. Example, some of the notebooks back in 2007 with the 8xx series nvidia chips.. bad solder which cracked and failed only after many months.. and it was a huge problem. In cases like that, literally millions of people got screwed over and it was almost impossible for early adopters to foresee that coming. There is a settlement going on now that nvidia will now pay millions for that blunder.

If you really want to reduce your risk from your purchase you will want to buy a model that has been out awhile to see if some kind of systemic issue starts to get reported on this forum. As you can see, you have to be prudent and use allot of common sense to "get a good one" as I like to say.

I have had the occasional problem with the consumer line, especialy with all the defective Nvidia 8000 GPU's. I use alot of their business class units ( Elitebooks) and never had any trouble with them in 4 years.

alot of it also depends on what you plan on doing wth your machine

I bought my HP DM3z on October 22, 2009, the day this model came out.

Haven't had a single problem except for one cosmetic issue, the paint around the edge is chipping off but it was a $500 consumer notebook so I'm not complaining.

I would buy an HP again if given the option.

I am happy with my DV6TSE. performance is great. HP really only pissed me off when they had the nvidia 8000 series cards. this is my first hp and can say I like it. my gf has the first hp dv6 se that thing still runs great has never given us trouble. I use many dells, IBM/lenovo and fujitsus and this HP has been just as good.

Quite please with my HP, only criticism would be to myself for choosing an i7 over an i5 because I don't need it and could have saved money. Few bad GPU crashes at the start but that was because of an outdated driver. HP have done well to win me over this time round.

I got the cheapest one they had. A V5000 with a bad keyboard. They replaced it with an upgrade V6000. They had me update the bios and it fried something so they replaced the mobo. I put the biggest cpu and ram I could in it and have been screaming with vista ulitmate since it came out, 5yrs in Jan. Quite frankly I wont get another one until this one breaks, if I live that long...

I was searching for some solutions concerning my wife's dv6000 she bought about... 2 years ago? And saw this thread.

    It's a piece of crap.

The power adapter has failed once.
The motherboard was replaced under warranty once.
It needs to be replaced again because the socket for the charger once again is not charging the battery (but it's no longer under warranty)
The little touch (in)sensetive buttons are a good idea but poorly implemented. I have a better chance of accurately adjusting volume if I beat it with a broomstick.
After 2 years, the hinges are like butter, anything more than 20 degrees off perpendicular and the screen sloooowly opens or shuts on it's own.
The palmrest is literally flaking paint off by the day now.
And lastly, it's more like a portable space heater, that happens to check email when it's in the mood. It will literally raise the ambient temps around it.

The mini has been great though. And I like elitebooks. But if this is indicative of pavilion quality, we would've been better off buying an inspiron. It's cheaper and at least then I'm expecting shoddy build quality.

Stepping into the way back machine, I'm typing right now on a 5+ year old Pavilion zv6130 that has been pretty much flawless since I bought it at circuit city (RIP :p ). Only issue was the infamous left (CPU) side hinge 'crack' from heat deterioration. But I'm no doubt partially to blame since I never even used compressed air or attempted to clean the vents for nearly 5 years so what can I say? :D
Machine won't die but I'm still looking for a newer pavilion or probook (despite the sucky SQ) though of late, the Dell Studio XPS and Acer Timline X are also contenders. Still prefer most of the pavilion's styling though...

BTW, FWIW, I also use an Omnibook 6000 (circa what, 1990's?) w/a P3 CPU to run car diagnostics on my Nissan and it runs XP flawlessly...

Mine Dv7 got serious push today. Put it to do a 3D render from 3:00AM to 8:00PM always at 100%. In meantime i started to web navigating/searching, mail etc on it at around 13:00 while put the render with a less CPU priority to not have hangs. No problems.

I have had no problems with my 6 year old HP Pavilion ze5700. I recently purchased another HP laptop, the G72 B66US.

My wife has an HP, my sister-in-law has 2 HP's, and my brother-in-law will soon have an HP.

There is not company that produces a "perfect" laptop. Research is the best thing to do.

Ad you could tell by my signature below, I own 3 HP laptops.

I have had my HP DM4 for about 2 weeks now and I couldn't have been happier. My previous laptop was a HP DV6324us. I got the wireless replaced under the HP extended warranty when it fried out. After that, it hasn't let me down except in terms of battery performance. I love the HP DM4 for about everything. It is lightweight, pretty sturdy, and has great battery life. Thumbs up for HP for doing something right on this model.

I am about to get my 4th HP notebook in 8 years (a DV5T which should ship next week - i7 860 w/ blu ray. Have 8GB of memory and a 120GB SSD waiting for her). I just sold my DV3T (P8700 chip w/ 4GB memory) to a friend which I had for 14 months...Didn't have a single issue with it.

My other two were entry level laptops...the back light died under warranty on one of them and was fixed by HP...No issues on the other one...

I seem to find better deals when I am looking for HP so I have stuck with them...

I loved my DV6 for the short period I had it. Let me summarize by putting it this way, the design team at HP belongs in a zoo, but other than that, I loved it :).

I was very impressed when I initiated the return, did not have to pay a cent, they took it back and (supposedly anyway, still too early hah!) every dime I spent will be back in my bank, did not even pay shipping. Took no gruff, I told them quite honestly that I loved it but there were just too many small issues and unfortunately no HP product was going to work for me.

    Was very impressed.

(Since some may be curious why I toot HP's horn when I returned their laptop- I found three or four flaws with the DV6, all that were issues I knew going into it, and each one no problem by itself, but together too much- 1) Keyboard [extra keys on left] 2) Touchpad size 3) Screen Size [too big] 4) Resolution [too small, particularly on a 15.6" screen])

Will post a full review soon.

I just replaced a 5 yr old HP V4000 with a dv7se. The old V4000 has never has a single problem, it was just a little slow and underpowered for 2010. It's now in my bedroom.

I've had the new dv7se for 3 weeks and so far it is flawless. Everything I hoped it would be.

    Two thumbs up!!!!
