    Brand New dv9500t

I am concerned that the computer is rather hot both to the left and right of the touch pad. Especially hot 1 inch below the windows key. I do not hear a fan. I had an old Dell that had a very loud fan but never felt hot. This puppy heats up rather fast. I am not doing much beyond surfing the net. The underside, of course, is hotter still. No way I want this puppy on my lap. I have the computer on a flat hard surface. No vents are blocked.

The source of the heat is Bay #1 on bottom left. It is not the battery which is the coolest part of the bootom along with the DVD Bay.

How do I tell if the fan is working correctly?

    Do I have a problem?

I am well with in my window to return the machine but i would hate to do so.

    Any ideas guys?

Well it's the summer time now, it will run hot. It's a larger machine if your very concerned then you can buy a cooling pad for it. Notebooks in general espescially the larger ones run hot normally.

I have a 6500t and I noticed the same thing, though my cpu temps are just 47c, so everything seems to be fine. Its just that it gets quite hot under the windows key area, to the left of the touchpad.

MY internal temps are 29c - 35c under normal operation. And yes you can clearly hear the fan running when it does.

My left palm rest never gets hot to the touch.

A kid in the office swears by the following: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

Spe edfan is free. It will also allow you to adjust fan speed on your own and is free. Looks decent on my desk top. I will try it on the dv9500 tonight.

Bay 1 feels hotter than bay 2 on my dv9500t as well. Nothing to get alarmed over though, it's not that hot. The GPU must be near bay 1 maybe? I haven't seen the mb layout so I don't know what's in that area.

ok, I investigated a lot and, the normal temperature for the GPU need to be 70-80C idle is 45C, and for CPU and HDD 40-60C, more than these temperatures is bad. Right?, anyone have another temperatures? I need to corroborate these temperatures...

Idle CPU: 55-60 degrees right now. Just surfing the net.
    Idle GPU: 62 degrees.

    That's all I can add.

    Idle CPU: 48C right now

According to Notebook Hardware Monitor (I use that to check cpu temps and undervolt), it shows critical temp for my cpu as 110c. I've noticed that my cpu temp never goes below 46C. Usually between 46-50.

Above 40C kills hard drives. If your drives are higher than 40C, get some kind of laptop cooler.

The MTBF of a hard drive at 50C is *half* the MTBF at 40C.

Don't worry about the CPU and GPU, these components are designed for VERY high temps in a notebook.

In my DV6000T i get 26c-29c idle. net surfing, downloading torrents and like, itune lets say...i get into the 30's like 38ish. hard drive temp is always about 42c, maybe a little lower sometimes.

    BUT, thats in XP

I had Vista Premium on it for a little bit, and my temps went through the roof.

My new dv9500 is avg hot 56c (131f) and a low of 53c. I am not happy this puppy heats up really fast. I was running the free version of Hard Drive Inspector and the warning alarm went off.

    http://www.altrixsoft.com/en/hddinsp/

I called HP and advised the HD was showing 56c. I was told to send it in for repair. Lucky for me I am within seven days, you get 21. This guy is heading home to HP. Now I have to decide whether I want to try again. Allegedly they would let me jump the line and HP would ship a replacement quick but... I am a now a little nervous.

I was planning to buy a 6500 because I've been told by others that it runs cool and quiet. What gives? Different components?

maybe a combo of components as well as where one lives. My friend got the exact same 6500t with identical specs as mine, but his avg temp is usually around 38...funny thing is that he lives down in florida so his should be hotter than mine, esp coz my ac is always on and he doesnt have one..hmmm

I just want to follow up on this previous comment of mine.

I recently swapped my pair of 7k100 drives (as delivered by hp) for a pair of sexy new 7k200's.

The notebook underside is very noticibly cooler, and there is no longer a temp differential between bay 1 and bay 2. They feel exactly the same now, and much cooler than they were before.

I checked the hdd specs, 7k100's consume 1.1A while the new 7k200's only consume 800mA.

Seems like most of this dv9500t underside heat is from the HDD's.....

I installed SpeedFan on my new 6500t CTO but it doesn't recognize the hard drive. I thought all new HDs were SMART? Any program able to get the HD temp?

My CPU is usually between 28c and 35c, so I think that's OK, but I'm concerned about how warm the left side gets.

Does anyone know of a Vista SideBar gadget to monitor HD and/or CPU temp?

    Thanks

Some reason all these temp detecting software doesn't work on my laptop. Which is a Dv6000z with Vista. All the software said can't find any hard drive. Anyone knows why?

Same here. Everest can find the model of the HD and all that. But NO programs manage to read the SMART infor nor temperatures. Ive tried at least 5 different programs.

New machine same !@#$%^& problem. Almost out of the box the primary HD went to 60C and never went below 54C on periodic restarts. The 2ndary was stable at 38C. The machine was on a hard cool surface. Ventalation was not an issue. This morning it is at 49C

North American tech support said send it into be fixed. I asked about bios and other settings but was told to send it in. I'll be returning it. I am not happy. Tech support said she almost never recieved this type of call. No more 9500 tries for me. Too bad, I otherwise thought nice machine and a great value. Darn it!

It all depends on what HDD brand is installed in your laptop. This exact area is HOT because of a Hard Drive is right underneath. There might be WD, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Seagate HDD's installed. I have had WD Hard Drive factory installed and it was pretty cool and I never noticed it's very hot. Usually, Fujitsu HDD's are showing extreme heat. Now I have replaced WD with my new Seagate 7200rpm 160Gb and it's even cooler than factory installed WD. There are no other components installed in that area.

You mean WD? Western Digital. I am not sure of a Seagate model in your machine, but it might be just faulty or the model itself too HOT.

First off, does replacing the stock cpu goo with arctic silver make a noticeable difference in temperature?

Second, I was having problems taking my laptop apart to replace the cpu goo and here's the problem I ran into:
While taking the laptop apart using the manual provided by hp (which details how to completely disassemble the laptop). Anyways, I took everything off as they stated, but I couldn't get off the top part where the mouse pad is. I looked through the manual several times and I disconnected everything it said to. I didn't want to apply force to taking off the piece because I didn't want to break it. Is there a trick to getting the cover off where the mouse pad is? I included a picture so you could see what I'm talking about.

    View attachment 9739

I might not be explaining this correctly, and if I'm not please let me know.

My wooden table seems to better for the HD then my formica counter top. The wood is absorbing some of the heat. The HD#1 is now running in the high 40's and today only maxed at 51C. (the high for me is 61C) HD#2 is running 12-14C cooler.

I have a DV9650 I'm about to upgrade from the C2D 5250 to a 7100. I'm a bit scared to attempt the disassembly after reading the service manual. (I'm no stranger to turning screws but after working on Asus' Z-series for awhile, this thing appears to be a bit daunting...) Can anyone attest to how easy or difficult these are to work on? Pitfalls to watch for? Thanks!

    According to Speedfan:

    Temp1: 52C
    Core0: 28C
    Core1: 28C

Is this normal for my dv6500t? This is like 5 minutes after I turned on the notebook...

The current 4.34 beta of Speedfan fixes the temperature readings for Intel Core CPUs, so those core temps are probably higher than you see.

I know this is a semi old thread... but I have (a) question(s)

my temps at idle seem to be with a HP dv6000z

    HD 80gb: 52C
    ACPI: 58C
    AMD Turion 2x 1.8ghz: 43-50
    Nvidia GPU: 71C

under load of 2 browsers, one I/M, speedfan and Ad-aware SE

    same order as above

    53C
    58C
    63C
    88C
