I've measured the CPU heatup a few times, and I am getting 52 when it's at idle, and it goes up into the 60's when it's working on something. this is a P4 3.0 w/ HT.

I have a feeling this is too hot and causes more active fan usesage.. and shorter battery life. is there any way to dig out the heatsink? maybe I need to get rid of whatever wax they use and apply some thermal paste?

Since this is a P4 3.0Ghz CPU w/HT, 60 degrees doesn't seem too hot when something is running, especially for a CPU at these speeds.
You can try checking out the Notebook Mods section in the forums, there might be a mod on how to make it run cooler. But by doing this, it will void your warranty if anything goes wrong.

I looked this up last night and I have a system like yours the P4 3.0GHz w/HT maxium Temp is 70c When idle mine runs in the upper 40's and then if I'm doing a DVD RIP/Encoding it will go as high as 61c but usally just the upper 50's. I won't worry, notebooks will have to run hotter but I believe these notebooks are cooled correctly. If you are really worried about it, you could get one of those coolers the laptop sits on with the fans to cool the entire case. I really don't think its worth taking apart your machine and voiding the warrenty though.
