    Hi,
I have had dell notebooks for the last 6 years and I always got extended warranty. If something broke, I would call them and they would ship a new one for me. For example a hard drive once. I also had a problem with my screen and they sent someone to fix it on my house.

How is the warranty & service with HP? Should I get extended warranty?

    I am considering getting a dv5t

    Thanks

Yes, you should get an extended warranty (direct from HP, not a third party).
HP's home computers come with a mail-in warranty: for most repairs, you need to:
-- back up your data (no matter what: HP will format the drive to fix a cracked hinge)
-- convince the Indian call center that it's a hardware problem
-- wait two days for the supposedly next-day shipping box
-- wait a week or so for the repair, if they have the parts in stock
-- hope and pray that they don't lose the machine, or damage it worse

    Stick with Dell.

    Wow!
That sucks. So they never fix anything on the spot if I take to the HP depot repair place?

And more good news for HP owners ... the "Exchange & Return Center" for HP operates from Phillipines ... the telephone connection is so Horrible ... I had to shout to get them to hear me ... once you are in their System ... you are basically SOL'ed (~ menaing Out of Luck).

    Alright...uhmmm...here's my take.

HP is a very reputable company, but they can't make everyone happy. That's a way of life. HP does their best at standing behind their product. When you buy their computer, you're investing in that company. They care about their investors. HP has been around very very long and they have good business ethics.

They have a few repair centers, such as Best Buy, etc. However a lot of times they send you a free prepaid shipping label and box to send in the notebook. It usually takes about a week. The good thing is, if for any reason you still have problems with it they might opt to offer you a replacement. Which I think is totally amazing.

My experience with Dell has been below abysmal. They have long hold times and the representatives are not very professional. Don't get me wrong, Dell is still pretty high up there on the totem pole, but good faith lies with HP.

You'll be happy with the HP! Just get an extended warranty.

The problem is that everytime you send the notebook to HP or, worse, Best Buy, you run the chance of getting all your stuff erased, if not, also have your data stolen.

If I bring, and just need a fix on my screen. They can't do it on the spot?

    Thanks

I'm sure they could but they might charge labor fees.

When you send in a notebook for repair they run diagnostics, so reloading the operating system helps to check off any potential problems.

It's their policy. They try to ensure customer satisfaction.

Wow Infamous ... 2 - 17" ... what do you do ... work one with Left hand and the other with the Right! :D

Actually Infamous has a point ... no manufacturer can make everyone "Happy" ... but they can try. And there is always a bad apple here and there.

Infamous ... I didn't know about the deal if HP can't fix your lappy they will give you a replacement deal!

    Thanks,
    G! :)
