Hi,
I was wondering how good the tuner is for the laptops. Is the picture clear? And will the tv tuners still be able to pick up channels after February since television broadcasters will switch from an analog signal to a digital one? So if i got one configured in my notebook i would get all the stuff needed to pick up the channels?

I have the tuner on my DV7t & am pretty happy with it. I use QAM & cable connection instead of OTA and the picture is very nice. Just be aware that you will not be able to get HDTV from a cable box since there is not an HDMI input (it is only an output).
I get local HD channels via QAM connection (I have Comcast). You will still be able to receive SD over you cable conneciton though. -
Do you need to hook a cable up or can you watch wirelessly?
-
I have not been able to get any signals without hooking it up to an external antenna or cable. That's why mine is hooked up to cable.

I received my dv7t last week and I'm not at all happy with the tuner. Since it has the digital atsc tuner built in, you shouldn't be affected by the switchover in February 09. But it won't seem to matter to me because my reception is so bad that I feel like I wasted $100 on something I won't use.
I already have 2 digital TV's in my house, both using desktop rabbit ears antennas, so I knew what to expect by way of digital channels coming thru. But I only get 27 channels as listed by the software after scanning, here in Queens, NYC, and they aren't nearly the same as the ones I get on the TV's. I know most of the network channels come in different versions e.g. 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, but not on the laptop. Not only that, the reception is horrible on most of the channels, even tho it shows 5 bars. Even weirder is that any pictures I do get are NOT choppy. In fact, it really looks like analog pictures with bad reception! A lot of ghosting, greyed out, snow etc.
Is it possible the digital part of the tuner isn't working? I get the same channels whether I use the HP antenna or rooftop. I live in a single family house, not an apartment building. -

I use QuickPlay & seem to have the same OTA reception / channels as my other TVs (I'm 15 miles from the transmitter antennas). Have you tried getting HD via QAM tuner using your cable connection? You will need to use Quickplay (Media Center does not support QAM yet), but that seems to give me the best HD reception.
It is a lot of money ($100) for the tuner upgrade, but I did not expect any better reception than what I got on my other HDTVs w/o a cable box. I just like watching TV while doing other stuff on my lappy. -
Working great for me.

I can vouch for the tuner on the DV7t. The DV7t is my spare laptop and I'm happy with the tuner.

Was I right that I don't seem to be getting digital reception since the images are NOT choppy, no "squares"?
I'll try Quickplay if I figure out how to. But don't I have a problem anyway?
Thanks. -

ah. That just seemed like too easy an answer. In my defense I didn't realize they were good at digital reception... Good stuff.

The laptop does not need to be off. I am guessing you just have it configured wrong. It quickplay you can chose either analog or digital so you can make sure you picked the right one. -
To open Quickplay via the remote, just click the button with the "loop symbol" (circle with the arrow) above the silver square / directional buttons. I have modified my start menu too much to remember where Quickplay is located by default within the start menu.
Try using the HP Digital Tuner (need to set it up first) & the signal recieved from there is digital. You probably won't get any better OTA reception than Media Center, but worth a try. Like I said before, you should be able to get a QAM signal (there is an option for that using Quickplay, if you already have cable. -
Thanks! -
I got a dv7t from Best Buy (without a TV tuner), and may be interested in buying a third-party tuner...would that work? Also does anyone recommend a certain brand or model?

so i went onto amazon and got this:
http://www.amazon.com/Hauppauge-119...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1227727520&sr=8-1
works really well, integrates with media center too. the quality is actually really really good. very fluid HD video when connected to a coax connection.
i'd reccommend this one. plus it's cheaper than the hp option. -
- NO it will not work in Europe... They use a different standard...
- The one that comes with the DV7 is a mini PCI-e card... you can get other types of external tuners seperately that use the ExpressCard slot or USB...
- I don't think the built-in TV tuner accepts video input. If you're capturing DV video, use the Firewire port.
- If you want compatibility between PC and notebook, get a USB tuner.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015
