Looking at the reviews for HP's batteries, many people are displeased with it. Their batteries stop working in less than 2 years. The shortest I think i saw it at was 10 months. How well are your batteries lasting you if you have had it for a couple of years? Anybody care to share?

My Lenovo one lasted about 1 - 1/2 years so that is on par (around 2 years)

So then I shouldn't be expecting it to last 4-5 years?

It may last that long but I doubt it would hold a charge at 100% level. In other words, the capacity of the battery will get less and less as times go by.

Right...the first thing you'll notice is that the battery stops lasting as long, even when fully charged.

I've seen mine go from 100% charged and then needing charging in about 20 minutes...

ive had my computer for a year in Febuary. My battery doesn seem any different from when i first bought it, like new. i had a Toshiba and when i first got it, the battery lasted 4 hours. After a had it for a year, it lasted about 1 1/2 hours.

on my last dv6000z, i went through 4 12cell batteries inside of 2 years, one only lasted 3.5 months. however, i was a victim of 3 mother board replacements including a faulty internal power supply. so it might have killed the charging capabilities a little quick.

wow... wonder if I should purchase a laptop now then. I was hoping it would last as long as the laptop with some charge... I am not willing to throw 100+$ each time to buy a new battery. What to do what to do... I don't need it until a year from now when i go to college, but I want one now. The laptop I returned I was using it the whole time, this desktop i'm currently using I stopped using...

    Hmm...

What if i have it charged and plugged in most of the time? Doesn't this slow down charge cycles?

As far as i know, its good for the battery to be charged fully and then used fully on a regular basis. My battery hasnt seemed to deterierate at all and i usually take it out and run it on battery until it reaches 10% and then i get myself to get up and get the charger and plug it in. I do this whenever i use my lappy. QHich is at least once or twice a day.

May I suggest reading the battery guide.

Yeah i've read that, but thanks. It's just that on hp's website, reviews state batteries wore out quicker than I wanted them to last, some even state they just stopped working? But anyway, I was hopeful my 12 cell battery would be able to hold maybe more than 50% of a new one. So i'm wondering whether if it's worth waiting or not. Really want it right now, but I don't want the battery to only last me an hour when I hit college. And along with that, I'm wondering if it's even worth buying a 12cell because it causes the protrusion...

if its really important to you, order the notebook now and when you get it, put the battery to the side and dont use it. just use the laptop on AC power until you go to college. then, the battery wont have a chance to deterierate. or if its in your budget, get a 6 cell and a 12 cell. Then use the 6 cell and, leave the 12 to the side. then when its college time, use the 12 cell . then, the 12 will be in new condition for college without any wear.

Hmm... Good suggestion ahl395. Cost 100$ more though... I'll see if they bring about a 500$ coupon off at 1399.99$ again.

Is it ok if the 12cell is not used at all? I mean, with batteries on use it's a good idea to at least run it through one charge cycle a month or couple months... not sure. But, since I won't be using it until a year from when I receive it, can I just leave it stored somewhere? In addition, should I buy a 6cell + 12 cell now or just a 6 cell now and a 12 cell later... ****... That reminds me, I'd just be buying another battery anyway! Which was my main problem from the start, I don't want to keep having to buy new ones... Hmm...

Also, can I just charge the battery to 100%, take it off, run on AC power, and when I need it, put it in? I mean, is it bad to leave the battery at 100% while it's not in use?

its probably cheaper to order both at the same time.
I would order both batteries from HP when you order the laptop. To ensure that it is Genuine. unless you find a Genuine HP battery at a reseller for cheaper.
No, if youve never used it, you wont have to do charge cycles. Think of it this way: HP makes the batteries in mass bunches, so they leave them in storage for months until needed. They dont deteriorate then, so if you store it also, its no different and shouldnt deteriorate.

No, it wont harm the battery.

I had these same questions in mind and basically its OK to just leave it in. Its believed that batteries are going to deteriorate anyway but you can do the things found in the battery guide to help extend the life of the battery some what but you could lose convenience and potentially loses data/work with there is no battery backup.

If you have a coupon and need 2 batteries, I'd get them at the same time

You're complaining about your battery not holding charge one year from now 'when you need it', but you'd also like a laptop now so you can use it in the meantime.

I'd suggest a little decisiveness. If you can't afford something, don't buy it.

Its common sense... if you want to use something for a year, but you're reluctant to have to buy a new battery ($100) its obviously not very important to you.
Just put the money aside and buy a laptop a year from now. You'll be getting a lot more for your money than you would now.

My dv6000 is 13 months old and the battery check utility says it is time to replace the battery already. I don't use the laptop much and didn't think to check it right at 12 months. Knowing HP, they program the laptop to read OK until month 13. I now get around 1.25 hours on a full charge where I got about 1.75 or so when the battery was just a few months old.
