I know it takes like 30min to assemble a laptop taking your time, so how accurate can "in production" be? I know they haven't been assembling it for almost 3 days.
-
It may take you 30 minutes to re-aseemble a laptop with all the parts (that's still pretty quick) but doing so on an industrial scale when you have to get parts in to satisfy every single configuration is a bit more of an endeavor.
Mine was 'in production' from about last Friday evening (Eastern US time) until early this morning. -
Well they already have the casing, all they have to do is grab the right CPU, drives, LCD and RAM chip. I've worked in a wear-houses thought out HS and College, a Car takes only 24hrs(less) to go from sheet metal to assembled, painted and out the door. A laptop isnt as complicated, or have as many options.
-
Well, I guess you can write a strongly-worded letter to HP about how inefficient their production line is. Of course you'll need to write it in Chinese. Best get on that.
Laptops aren't anything like cars and HP (like every other brand out there) is dependent on a number of suppliers for all of their parts as it's pretty dangerous to keep too much inventory for that sort of thing. They also have other customers. -
-
It depends on the model and how back logged they are. I ordered a TM2 and a DM3, the TM2 was about 10 days before shipping and the dm3 is still in production with a estimated ship date of about 15 days from initial purchase.
They are pretty backlogged I imagine. The coupons they have been putting out have been good for about 1800-2500 uses, and some of them go away in 48 hours, so aside from any other orders, they have 2000 to build. Plus all the laptops that are in their stock and warehouses for places like best buy and quickship. Plus all the ones from people who didn't use coupons for online purchases. They may also rotate which model they build everyday depending on how their factory is setup, They may only build TM2s once a week. Hard to say though, their estimated ship date has been pretty accurate for me.
Edit** I also found out a while back that the place that builds these is not HP, they contract the work out to a vendor, so that vendor might do other companies as well. -
i ordered my envy 15 on friday 3/5. it still says in production today -
My order was on Friday also.

If your suggestion is 'I sat next to a guy who worked for a different company' and your conclusion is 'therefore my laptop should be built in 30 minutes' in spite of everyone here telling you that that never happens, then you already know best and don't need our help.
I'm sure there are plenty of things in common between auto manufacturers' supply lines and HP or Dell, but that has no bearing on your OP, which is 'how long will it remain in production.'
Maybe it does take them 30 minutes to assemble it. Maybe not. But whatever their procedure, no laptop manufacturer will ship you a build-to-order laptop as quickly as you seem to want unless you order one they've already got ready to go. -
My point is that the "in production" line is as inaccurate as your attempt to compare the auto and computer industries.
I can disassemble and reassemble a DV6000 in about 1hr with manual tools, and I know how faster orders go through a factory, a 100+ piece plumbing order takes about 45min from the order sheet hitting the warehouse to getting a shipping label. That should make total time about 2hrs from reaching the warehouse. Assuming HP knows how to run a production line, maybe less at they assemble laptops all day, I don't. -
Nobody here vouched for or said anything about how accurate HP's 'order status' page is.
I'm sure your mechanical skills are very impressive. You're a troll and I'm sorry I tried to answer your question. -

I put mine in on Thursday. Unfair!
Anyways, it might only take an hour to build, test and package YOUR computer but it's not like the you're the only customer they have. They have to build thousands of computers with dozens of different models and hundreds of different configuration.
And remember they ship in bulks so they won't ship out until they stockpiled X number of computers going to Y. I mean do you really expect them to just send out 1 computer at a time? The shipping costs would bankrupt Bill Gates! And there's customs and what not.
It says "in production" but more accurate would be "process of being, built, tested, packaged" then to "waiting until every order that needs to ship out by X to finish" then to "going through customs".... but that would be needless since "in production" is usually enough to satisfy most people.... -

Well....
According to my experiences with HP, the production normally take 5 business days. However, if you are lucky, you'll get it early. HP does tells you the " expected ship date." That is the day in which your laptop is finished building and it handed off to FedEX to bring to your doorstep. It is generally very accurate, but if you are lucky it will ship early. -

Is that with the 2 day shipping?
-
For the record, I purchased last week. My ESD was the 11th. It began to ship yesterday, but the package was received after the FedEx cutoff, and my new expected delivery date is the 16th. But, if it arrives in Memphis today/tonight, and gets to CT tomorrow, I'll stand a chance. -
Actually...it arrived in Anchorage. I no longer have that hope. ; )
-
yes 2-day shipping. For your guys info., I purchased 2/28, shipped 3/8-3/9(depending on timezone), estimated build was 3/10, estimated ship 3/12. I also followed it with flightaware.com to see if it make the flight from kmem-phnl.
Just saw a fedex truck outside my office just now.....but it left!! grr!
I still have hope though, most times another truck will come at 3pm'ish to our side of the street! -
