Hi all. I have recently purchased HP Compaq 8710w machine and so far very impressed with it.
    T7300
    nvidia FX1600
    3GB RAM
    WSXGA (1680x1050) Anti-Glare

I love mine; It's a great laptop. If I had a choice to buy another laptop, I would purchase it again.

I love mine too. Very nice machine although the fan is a little too loud sometimes.

Does anybody knows a good fancontrol-tool for the 8710w??

Yeah, the loudness was a bit annoying to me too. I have found that firefox tends to overuse the processor with lots of flash (and for some reason it triggers high-cpu usage of asghost.exe as well), causing some heat and thus, the cooling turns on all the time. NoScript addon to firefox fixed that :)

I also adjusted the battery controls to allow underclocking of the processor when plugged in, which helps as well.

I noticed a couple of weird issues however, could someone check if they have the same? The easiest one to repro is this: turn on both the NUM lock and CAPS lock. Now, turn them off in a CAPS lock first, NUM lock second order, and watch the volume controls above the keyboard (the nice touch control buttons). For me, it starts flashing erratically and does it for a couple of seconds. I am not sure if I have a faulty piece, or this affects all machines of this type, hence my question :)

    cheers,
    laszlo

I don't know guys about your loud fans as mine is silent as death :) Never works too hard...well, sometimes when I do my AVCHD-rendering, but not as much as on my 9500.
Are your touch control buttons lighted when inactive? I thought they should be lighted-up as it's hard to see where to touch in the evening with lights dimmed around.
Overall great machine and no complaints so far! Also, I know I can downgrade the Vista Business to XP Pro but where to get the copy of XP? Anyone was doing this?

You would have to call HP for the XP downgrade.

Thanks for checking Optomos, seems like I might have a hardware fault then.

I don't have any fan noise when its on a desktop, but if I put it on my bed or sofa and the vents get blocked, the fans turns on and it is loud. Other then that, no.

I have the same problem, even worse, because it activates the touch-buttons. So I get numerous instances of the calculator and/or info center popping up. I also get this (sometimes) when I open the lid wider and close it again. I don't know yet if this is hardware or software related. Has anyone had this issue and has it fixed ?
