I want to transfer some old DV tapes to DVDs through an old JVC mini-DV camcorder with a DV/4-pin firewire connection but I do not know how many pins the firewire port on my laptop is. I was under the impression that all notebooks used a 4-pin connection, and it looks like it is 4 pins, but the connector pin assignments section of the user manual lists it as 6 pins.

    Can anyone clarify?

a 6 pin port implies that the connector is supplying power. A 4 pin connector is the signal/data lines only. There are plenty of adapter cables that let users connect between the 4 and 6 pin connectors.

BTW, I've never seen a laptop with a 6 pin firewire port that actually had the power available. Just dummy pins. Doesn't mean that you can't find a lappie or a PCMCIA/ExpressCard adapter *with* a powered 6 pin FW port, it's just that I've never seen one. Macbooks are different, there may have at one time a macBook or three that had 6 pin powered FW ports.
