I'm a student who uses 3D Studio Max a lot and need to seriously upgrade my 1 GB of RAM. I'm looking to jump up to 4 GB but I wasn't sure if these laptops are even capable of handling that much.

Also, any general comments on brand names, good or bad, would be handy as I'm not exactly the most computer savvy person in the world.

    Thanks you guys!

Max memory for the hardware is 4 GB, which may be limited by 32-bit architecture.

    Eek, I do have 32-bit.

What sites do you trust? Is Newegg or TigerDirect trustworthy?

I wasn't there when it happened but off topic, I feel for your Virginia Tech shooting, I was in a few support groups and staying on top of the news on that.
But I'm from Nebraska (in Seattle for school) and we had that Von Maur shooting. Maybe it isn't the same level of severity but still =/
