I have a fairly urgent need to get a laptop, however, there are some issues with the HP Envy 15 that I still find undesirable. I don't know if I can wait till it gets another refresh, since it was just recently renewed with the i5 processors (and as I gather from these forums, addressed squeaky build issues, monitor problems, touchpad firmware update, etc). Or perhaps I could wait a little longer for the rumored HP Envy 14, which may arrive before an Envy 15 refresh.
Having never been interested in HP computers before until now, I wonder if there is a general predictability to how often HP refreshes their laptops? (like Apple products, which results in purchase guides with timelines, like this: http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/ )

Generally, companies update their line based on the release of Intel's new platform, while making tweaks to their current line based on Intel's CPU refreshes.

What does an Intel platform mean?
I know superficially about the concept of Moore's Law. So that would mean PC makers generally refresh every 18 months or so along with Intel's CPU refreshes? Or perhaps not; Moore's law merely refers to transistor doubling, so in the interim I suppose there could still be new CPUs.
Thanks, sgogeta4. -
Intel not only refresh cpu but also chipset and wireless card at the same time. I think that's why called intel platform.

Exactly, platform typically refers to a whole new socket (older CPUs won't work with the new motherboard chipset) plus new wireless adapter. Intel typically cycles through a new platform annually, while refreshes would be just minor updates with faster CPUs or more featured motherboard chipsets in between (6 months before/after a platform).

Good question....I was hoping next week at CEBIT? not sure if there is a specialized site to tell

I feel much less inept now. Thank you for your great replies everyone.
