    Hello all,

I am currently looking for a laptop to replace my dell studio 1340. It's not powerful enough for my taste.

I am interested in the new HP Envy 14, but am little bit concerned over the size. For example, is this laptop small enough to fit on the tray in an aircraft? Is it easy to carry and use wherever you go?

Or should i just go for the alienware m11x instead? My cousin has one. Looks about the same size as the studio 1340. The only thing it does not have is the built-in dvd-rw drive.

    Thank you.

Have you checked out the HP Envy 13?

    Much longer battery life.

    Much thinner.

    Much smaller.

The CPU out preforms the Alienware m11x.

    Hi

Yes, but the onboard GPU is weak on the Envy 13 when compared to the M11x and Envy 14.

So i guess the m11x is better choice for maximum portability?

    Thanks.

I would wait to see battery life results on the Envy 14 which I think will be your main concern. In about a week more people will get their envy 14 laptops and will run more battery life tests.

I have a m11x, but I am selling it... The screen is too small for my taste.

Going from a 13" to a 14.5" the Envy may seem to big. But you are missing a great option. The Dm4. If I wasn't going the other way (down from 17" and 15.4") I'd be looking at it. But I really like the 1600x900 and 14.5 screen on the Envy. The 14" 1366x768 is just a little too big of a drop.

HP Pavilion dm4t customizable Notebook PC
    •Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    •Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-540M Dual Core processor
    •4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
•FREE Upgrade to 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
•512MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5450 switchable graphics
    •14.0" diagonal High-Definition HP BrightView LED Display (1366 x 768)
    •SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
•50% OFF! One 6 Cell (standard) and One 9 Cell (over-sized) Lithium Ion Battery

    All for $1100-$1200

And you can still add more ram and bump the GPU up to 1GB if you really want.

The Envy 14 is thicker and slightly heavier than the Envy 15, one inch less length and a little less width, so perhaps a bit more boxy? I haven't seen one in up close in person yet. here is a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMiaR2eYwao

    Envy 13
    12.59 (L) x 8.46" (W) x 0.8 (H)

    Envy 14
    14.01" (L) x 9.33" (W) x 1.09" (min H)/1.11" (max H)
    5.2 lbs

    Envy 15
    14.96" (L) x 9.60" (W) x 1.04" (H)
    5.17 lbs

Go to Staples. They have the HP Dv5 which also has a 14.5" screen. It should give you an idea of the dimensions of the envy 14.

You can see my post elsewhere on this forum about my experience with the Envy 14... but with that being said, I still think it is the best combination of power/portability/high-resolution screen/cost available today.
