Hi everyone, my laptop uses a Western Digital hard drive and I want to connect it to my desktop computer. I bought the Laptop to IDE cable which looks like this.

The part that connects to the laptop looks like the bottom half of the following picture.

The problem is, the hard drive has no connectors that will fit into that. Here is a picture of the hard drive with the adapter that is used in my laptop.

    And with the adapter off...

    Any help would be appreciated.

It looks like your notebook hard drive is sata

And it also looks like you are trying to interface it to pata

Does your desktop support a sata hard drive

Do you see that peice of platic on the end of the hard drive with the pins sticking out of it. Thats your hard drive adapter to your specific laptop ( from the looks a dv2000 dv6000 or dv9000 ). Anyways pull that off it pulls stright out dont take it off at an angle. After its off you have a standard sata power and data cable all you need to do is plug that into your desktop using the same cables in your PC asuming you have sata in your desktop.

I'm not sure about this SATA and PATA thing but the gold and white part of the cable that I bought plugs into my desktop computer just fine. Now I have to plug the part with the holes to the laptop hard drive. It looks like the lower part of this picture.

I found another cable on my desktop that looks like it would fit the 4 pins on my laptop. It looks like this.

Off topic: Are you from 604 area too?

Yes I've pulled it off already and this is what it looks like. The only thing that has nay pins at all is the 4 pins on the right. My adapter needs to receive has 44 holes in it so it won't fit.

You have the wrong adapter. It is for a Parallel ATA (PATA) drive, you have a Serial ATA(SATA) drive. As tippey764 said above, if your desktop is SATA capable, you should be able to use normal SATA data and power cables to connect this drive.

All this time I thought it was PATA but my hard drive is actually SATA. Also, my desktop is IDE so that's what I'll need to buy. Thanks everyone.

What do the connters look like that go to your desktops hard drive? Take a picture. http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/directron/sac041.jpg you should have a cable in your desktop like that ( they might not be connected ) if not you need to get one. What kind of desktop is it so we can tell if you can even run sata. Also thoes 4 pins on the hard drive are for jumpers i think dont bother with them.

The picture you linked would fit on my laptop's hard drive. That means its a SATA right? My desktop does not have that though. The connectors on my desktop look like the cables on the right [IMG]

I believe that it means I have IDE on my desktop. My desktop is a dinosaur (10 years old and counting) and I don't think SATA existed when the motherboard was made. Right now I'm considering on getting a PCI card to support SATA or just get a cable that will convert from SATA to IDE.
