Some how, I lost the only recovery DVD that I burned,
is there a way to make another copy?
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=129029
has a method to rename HPCD.sys in both C: and D:
but I can't find them with search, and I can't open to see my recovery disk,
    Anyway to bypass that?

    Thanks

You can't. The program locks you out. Might as well pay HP $19 to send you a copy.

Im able to create another set of Recovery disks for some reason. I must have reset it by accident when fixing/tweaking something.

Try system restore to an earlier date.. might work?

:( I created my lost recovery set as the first thing I did....
Probably I don't have any restore point for it.... T_T

To find the hpcd.sys, go into the folder options and make sure "hide protected operating system files" is not checked. Also make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is enabled. Then you should be able to see the files.

I wonder, can you just make an exact copy of the recovery disk that has been created, say into an ISO and burn the iso to another disc? If that works, that's probably the only method.

You should be able to create an ISO image of each of the recovery disks and burn them again. The only thing that would stop you from doing that is if HP put encryption on it, but I doubt they do on the discs you burn yourself.

You could maybe see if someone on this site has the same config as you and see if they would be nice enough to copy their set of recovery disks and mail them to you. I think its ridiculous how HP only allows you to burn one set of disks. I wonder what would happen if you call HP and said that the recovery disks you burn were bad....maybe they might send you out another set for free or tell you how to burn another set. I don't know what they would do if that happened, but its worth a try.

Or restore the whole system to factory default and make another recovery disc.

Yes, you could make an ISO (even if it were encrypted), but that doesn't help the OP who *lost* the copies he already made.

Instead of deleting the hpcd.sys file? Seems like a lot more work.

Make sure you are using DVD+R discs. You cannot use DVD-R, DVD+RW, or DVD-RW. Some others may say they had success with them, but they are officially not supported. A search of the forum might help, as I've seen others who have reported similar problems. If that doesn't help, then contact HP.

If you try to burn the discs again, does it still tell you it won't make them?

yup. it wont let me burn the discs still (even after renaming just the hpcd.sys file in e recovery partition). btw can u tell me in which folder is that file exactly in the C:? maybe i can manually go there to find it out. also just to confirm, i'm only supposed to rename the file to hpcd.bak rite? or am i supposed to delete the file altogether?

You can delete it or rename it, doesn't matter. When you search the C: drive, make sure you tell it to search all areas, even those not indexed.

the only hpcd.sys existed in my system is on the recovery partition..
so,even there isnt any hpcd.sys in you drive C:
    it doesnt matter..
you dont have to look for 2..if you got only 1 deleted, then it is fine..

Are you actually doing a search in C:, or just looking in C:\? You need to search the whole drive for it.

ok this is weird. how i used to search was to go in My Computer and search it in the top right hand corner. now i tried to search it by going to start and click search in the right pane (not talking abt start search)..and i found the file in C! and yeah now i can create the recovery disks. hmm what i just dont understand is how come i wasnt able to search the file in My Computer but in start>search i could?

    btw thanks orev!
