I want to disable OSD for volume on HP 8510w. In games, when I press mute it steal focus, switches to desktop and usually game crashes.

That doesn't work. He's asking how do disable the on-screen display when you adjust the volume.

When I upgraded to the latest version of Quick Launch, the OSD volume was added, but it steals focus from whatever was previously active. This also minimizes full-screen games, which is extremely annoying. I know older versions of quick launch (6.00) did not have a volume OSD; however, I'm not sure if that old version will work with the 8510w.

I actually want to know how to disable the OSD myself; as I have not figured out how yet, and I really don't want to have to resort to an older version of Quick Launch.

to disable the OSD for all of the quick launch buttons, just go into the quick launch control panel, where you configure anything quick launch related, and UNcheck "Display HP Quick Launch Buttons Desktop Notifications" under preferences. it turns off the volume osd for me.

try killing the process ehtray.exe. That is part of media center and controlled the OSD for the volume on my old dv9000t.

Thanks! That did the trick. For some reason, I thought that option was for something other than the OSD controls, which is why I missed it before.

Usually, it's located at the top of the keyboard and runs the length of the laptop.

I assume you are talking about the software to make changes to the QuickLaunch buttons. I don't believe the software to make changes is available on the dv6000 series with VISTA, I know it is not on my dv6775us.

If your intent is to get rid of the OSD you can follow this guide.
I posted it before but without the search function available I can't find my original post.

You don’t have to uninstall any software to get rid of the on screen Volume Display.

    1. Click the Vista start icon, bottom left.
    2. Type RUN in the Start Search box, ENTER.
    3. Type MSCONFIG in the OPEN: area, Click OK.
    4. Click on Continue if asked.
    5. Select the StartUp Tab in the System Configuration menu.
    6. Remove the Checkmark from the HP Quicktouch On Screen Display item.
    7. Click on OK and Restart if required.

Reverse above procedure to restore to original if desired.
