Just replaced my 1 gig with 4 gb ram 667 mhz (2x2gb)

My system runnign vista premium only recognizes 3gb, how do I get it to recognize the full 4gb?

    Thanks!

    Get Windows Vista 64-bit.

But Vista 64-bit sucks because it has all sorts of application compatiblity problems... sooo yeaaaah fun fun.

well to give you the bright side of it - ive used 64bit vista since it came out and haven't had one single software/hardware problem

and don't think that reg software won't work in it, its not like a mac/windows difference

use vista 64bit ifyou like it, all your programs will work just fine

and the 32bit software you use now will prob for sure work in vista 64bit

the only thing i would actually worry about is drivers needing 64bit...(which for my old dv2500t, hp had all of them....)

I wouldn't go telling him that ALL his programs will work just fine. I couldn't get it because I looked on a few lists and found a bunch of my programs were not compat. (e.g., iTunes, Mathcad, Spy Sweeper...) But yes, there are a ton that work fine...

If you really want to use those 4 gbs and get 64bit - I suggest you look on a few of those program compat. lists to see if there are any programs that you can't live without.

If it were me - I'd just use the 3gbs - that's a load of memory - and keep the 32bit - Having to buy 64bit and possibly having app compat issues isn't worth it.

well i was just going by me since i have yet to run into a program that hasn't work, but itunes is a big one so thats no good - but the ipod and itunes suck in general.... :)

you probaly wouldn't even notice a difference between the 2 so heres a compromise....

leave the 32bit and then in a year - get the 64bit and then, almost all programs will work AND you just got yourself a nice new uprade, you can act like you just bought a new 1gb stick and tell yourself your computer speed improved 10x!

Actually they can. Windows 64bit versions include WOW64 emulation( see wiki) allowing native 32bit apps to run in 64bit Windows. Ofcourse having said that not all 32bit apps especially those dependant on 32bit drivers and also the ones depenant on 16bit installers wont work in this mode. As long as you have 64bit drivers for the devices you plan to use there shouldnt be any issues with running either 64bit Vista or XP.

and if you're running vista already, just use the key you were supplied and get a 64 bit Anytime Upgrade Disk. CD keys are not format-specific, as in Home premium x86 key will activate under home premium x64 (I did that with my OEM desktop build, bought a 32 bit OEM disk and used the anytime upgrade to install 64x)

Hold on a second. I received the anytime upgrade dvd today and it says that only 32 bit software is on the disk. So how did you use the anytime upgrade dvd to install 64 bit os?

There is a separate anytime upgrade disk for the 32 bit version of windows and the 64 bit version of windows. Just to be safe I ordered them both, 10 bucks in total from circuit city - not bad.

hmm, I should do that, just to have the 64 bit version if I want... Maybe even do a dual boot of the two? And yes iTunes sucks. It is such a resource hog. They only thing I use it for is CD ripping... If anyone can suggest a better CD ripper I'd be all game to uninstall iTunes. I tried winamp but unless I buy the Pro version it is slow, plus the ones I tried were not ripping correctly...

dual-booting Vista isn't recommended. I purchased the x64 bit anytime upgrade disk so thats how I was able to just install x64. the OEM version i purchased of home premium was x86

Also remember that there isn't a lot of driver support for XP 64-bit.

iTunes works OK on vista 64bit, at least for me. It's sluggish, but I only use it to download stuff to my ipod, which also works fine on 64bit.

Use 64 bit Vista Bleive me it is the better opperating system they now have i tunes 64 bit (witch i do not use ) I buy and sell laptops and can put xp on any laptop.

    I have a dv6000 laptop with
    4 gig of crucuel ramm
    2.0 TL60 64x2 amd turion
    15.4 screen
    7150m n vidia
    jet black lid
    athros wifi a/b/n reciever
320 SATA 7200 RPM hard drive (seagate)

    Opperating systems
linux ubntu running all drivers quite well 80gb partition
Tiger x86 for macs 80gb partition (but takes 3)
windows xp pro intragrated service pack 3 activated 80gb partition
Windows vista Ultimate 64 bit 80gb partiton

all of those are in 4 partitions and the best one out of all of them is the tiger or the 64 bit vista .

I love softwhare i love playing with opperating systems and drivers

P.S with the laptop above that you have every opperating system i have mentioned above can be installed on your laptop if you do it correctly

Trust me put the 64 bit vista on their you will like it is very user friendly and faster than any opperating system i have ever seen and i have tried all of them.

you should edit out the part of tiger, since having an APPLE OS on a non-apple branded laptop/desktop is illegal.

What is the method of getting these from Circuit City for $10? Are they on the shelf, online?
