You can still recover Vista as long as you leave the recovery partition intact. Essentially you boot Vista directly to that recovery partition and reinstall from bootup.. I don't know which key you hit from startup but it should be in the info you received when you got your notebook. But I suggest you order the compusa vista anytime upgrade DVD on the clean install sticky for 5 bucks. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=120228. Its a detailed guide that will show you how to do a clean install of vista with your existing key without having to do activation.. This is far better installation then the bloated out version of vista that is on the recovery discs. HP will also sell you backup disc but that may not properly match your systems configuration. The best thing is to either just boot to your recovery partition or better yet do a clean install with a vista anytime upgrade disc.

Also, if you want to make an exact image of what you have now you can buy Acronis True image software which will allow you to make a bootable image. This sometimes is a better solution anyways since it saves everything you have right now.. The recovery disc takes you back to how your system looked when you first received it.. Acronis is a good piece of software and worth the price.
