I am about to buy an SSD which will require a firmware update. This in turn will ask to set the BIOS temporarily to IDE in order to do the update.

The problem is that I can't find that option anywhere in the BIOS!
Anyone knows how to do it?

If you have a desktop, do the update in that, then put the SSD in the laptop.

Besides, I also want to leave my laptop set to AHCI for a better performance of the SSD. Now I have no way of knowing which it is set on, IDE or AHCI. -
You can't change that setting. You would need to do the update on another computer with a less restrictive BIOS and then put the drive into your dv8t.
How to set AHCI/IDE in a dv8 BIOS
