    If you have a desktop, do the update in that, then put the SSD in the laptop.

    Unfortunately I don't have a desktop.

    Besides, I also want to leave my laptop set to AHCI for a better performance of the SSD. Now I have no way of knowing which it is set on, IDE or AHCI.

    You can't change that setting. You would need to do the update on another computer with a less restrictive BIOS and then put the drive into your dv8t.
