Yeah Plug it into the laptop turn the TV on. With the wire connected to the TV and the notebook restart it should work automatically.

I have the V2000Z, but this should apply to dv4000 too.

I just plug the cables to laptop and TV, and press Fn-F4 repeatedly(it toggles between, LCD, VGA port, S-video) until the image appears on my TV. You have to wait a few secs before each press of Fn-F4 since it takes time to sync.

I didn't have to restart the laptop to make it display on SVideo.

Alright, my ze5300 wouldn't work for awhile either, so here we go...

In the Start Menu under Programs, is there a heading for "Utilities"? On mine, the TV Now option is in there and is the main method for turning it on. However, I first needed to right-click on the desktop and go into the advanced settings for the display properties. Once there, I see a tab for Displays which will show my laptop lid, external monitors, and a TV icon. I am unsure if you will need to restart with the cord connected between the laptop and the TV, but I do know that I needed to enable output to the TV in this menu. I have no idea if your dv4000 has anything like what I just described and my laptop is 2.5 years old, but I am willing to bet that you haven't enabled the TV as an output source. Good luck.

My TV can only recognize the S-video if I switch to S-video input after I have turned on S-video out on my laptop. My DV4000 with x700 does have a place for TV setting but I never need to go there to activate S-video out. I hope it is not a hardware problem. If it is, one potential remedy (besides sending it in for repair) is to get an XC2000 cable ($60 at techexcess.net) if your dv4000 has the Expansion Port 2. It has another S-video output (and composite too) on it.
