Following the announcement of the DM4 today, did HP release any details on what graphics card it will come with?
I've searched but can't find anything.
I was going to order a sony e series 14 with an upgraded I5 chip, but the DM4 is tempting me as it has a much better battery life. Though if I order the sony before May 10th I can get a saving.
I'm tempted by the envy 14, but don't want to wait for that.
Shall I go for the sony? or is it likely that the HP graphics will be much better?
for info, the graphics on the sony I'm considering is ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570 512MB.
Wasn't sure whether to put this post in here or the "what laptop should I buy" forum, but since there isn't a DM4 post I thought i'd be useful to have this post here.

Here's what i've been able to find.
This looks like the specs of the low-end model:
http://www.hp.com/united-states/personal_again/datasheets/dm4_ds.pdf
That only lists the integrated graphics, but they said dedicated ATI graphics will also be available (see video link below). I'm sure that graphics card, processor, hard drive, etc can all be upgraded.
Also: YouTube - HP Pavilion dm4
And: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02097538.pdf -
thanks for that.
Think I'll be going for the Sony as I doubt the specs of the DM4 will be significantly better. -
I'd go with the Sony. Its likely that the Pavilion will offer nearly the same graphics power as the Sony Vaio E. They both are budget entry-level models.
-
there is a version of the dm4 which has dedicated ATi graphics. I cannot recall the exact chip it has but it is a decent mid-line type.
-
I'm really interested in the dm4 too. Specifically what the ATI discrete graphics option will be..
What exactly would be "decent mid-line"? Around 8,000 on 3D Mark05? -
Hmm.. this some searching and found this on notebookcheck.net:

HP Singapore also claims the dm4 would have the HD5450 GPU.Pity, I thought HP would fit the HD5650 in this model, well, maybe they'll do but definately not till May/June.
Sorry, I'm posting from mobile so I can not paste any links (the link can be found in the Arrendale Timeline Thread, page 248 or so). -
They are putting the 5650 on the envy 14, I doubt they will put anything as powerful as that.
-
This is what I saw
-
How's the screen quality on the Dm4 compared to the average laptops out there?
-
Its 720p I believe, 1366x768. Also today HP had a US press release about the refresh.
-
thanks nikeseven, also as gizmodian pointed out, the dimensions on the dm4 is "34.08 cm x 22.8 cm x 2.5 – 3.22 cm" so it's not truly under an inch thick correct? it goes from 1 inch up to 1.3 inches in height? Their statement of being under an inch thick is misleading.
Does "expected to be available in the United States on May 19" mean they will be made available on their website at the time or at local retail stores like Best Buy as well? -
You're correct. HP often uses the term under one inch thick when they actually mean that the thinnest point of the laptop is under one inch thick.
-
Yep, most (if not all) manufacturers do this. Really quite annoying with the wedge shaped designs.
-
Yeah. Do you guys think the dm4 will be made available at stores on May 19th or only for online orders?
-
I'd guess it would appear on HP's site first, then follow in the few weeks after at other retailers. Oh and about misleading, HP claims a Dm3t has 10 hours battery life which even with the ulv's is quite the stretch, lol.
-
How does the ATI HD 5450 compare with the Nvidia Geforce G310M?
-
It is a more powerful GPU than the 310M, but not by all that much. I consider it comparable to the 310M in function. It also has the advantages of Directx 11 capability and some other features absent from the 310M.

I gotta say that I love the look of the dm4.
-
Yea, the look and build looks great. I'm really considering ordering one once it comes out. I need a notebook with good battery life, no discrete graphics but can play 1080p movies with ease on a decent screen. The price is very tempting as well. I've never owned an HP before so I'm unsure of their reliability or of their warranty. Can anyone comment on that?
-
Strange, I was just about to post the exact same thread.
Anyway, HP's decision to include a Radeon HD 5450 in their 14" model is a little bit dissapointing. I was at least expecting a Radeon HD 5470 - that would've been sweet.
Don't mean to thread-crap, but what's up with the dv5 not having a brushed aluminum finish option? Is HP scared people would choose it over the Envy 14 or something? -
being about a week out until release, should we expect some reviews soon?
-
around 4 days left now...anyone know about this?
-
This isn't the kind of laptop that HP is going to push for reviewers to get their hands on .... at the same time, the laptop is the start of a new era for HP, so I may be wrong.
I would expect reviews to appear maybe a week after its release. -
That's unfortunate. I'll be buying one the day it gets released, would have been nice to see a review first though.
-
If I was in your position, and I didn't have a need to buy a laptop immediately, I'd just wait a bit and read the reviews.
-
I was going to order the dm3 but I was waiting for a good coupon and then I saw the press release about the dm4 so I decided to wait for it to come out. However, I'm very low on time since I'm going away to college next year and am probably going to start taking classes there this summer. As it is i'm pushing it by waiting till the 19th to place my order. Hopefully everything works out, I bought a dv7 (almost 2 years ago) a couple days after it was released and I've had no problems with it.
-
Is there a reason why there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of hype around the HP DM4? I am guessing the Envy 14 is taking more notice than this laptop. Is there something that I am not seeing where this laptop fails? Does the Envy 14 just blow this out of the water? I need a new laptop for grad school and I am leaning toward the DM4, but am I missing something?
-
Maybe they don't want to cannibalize Envy sales?
-
I have no idea why...personally, I can't stand the envy because of it's floral patterns. The dm4 is lighter, around the same thickness, and is highly configurable to be on the same level as the Envy (except for the graphics card, which is apparently weaker). I'm a student as well, not a gamer, so the graphics card isn't a very big deal to me, and the dm4 seems lighter, more portable, looks much more professional, has better battery life, and seems to be the better choice all around. I'm really surprised that not that many people on here are interested in it. Maybe they're just quiet about it.
-
I like the DM4. For many, it's a far better and more cost effective solution to their notebook needs. But, the Envy offers a better GPU, a better display and a broader range of CPU's. The cost is ... well ... higher cost.
For graduate school or most professional uses, the DM4 would be more suited.
I, for one, like the designs on the alloy cover.

i agree with u bronsky, i think the dm4 is well suited for the usual notebook user, those who don't do much or any gaming, and just web browse, use windows office, and stream hd videos from youtube. I only fear of hp's reliability since they have been known to have alot of fail rates but I've only seen data from years ago, not recent so im not sure how they are right now. I just hope the dm4 is built right and wont have any problems when it arrives at my doorsteps =)
-
If you look under the Sony forums, there are numerous complaints of Sony latops discharging their batteries when the notebook is powered off (not hibernation but power off). I own an SZ model of several years ago and the issue affects me as well. From recent discussions, Sony has yet to resolve the matter. I would double check on this issue. For someone who is frequently on the go, it should cause concern.
I'm in the market for a new laptop but will not consider Sony unless this issue has been resolved. The DM4 and the Envy 14 appears very attractive. Both are smaller unit that pack plenty of punch for the average user that doesn't do much gaming.

That's like jumping from one fire to another. -
So I just called the HP sales center attempting to find out more about the dm4/possibly preorder one, and the guy I spoke to said he didn't know anything about it. He went to ask a supervisor, came back a minute later and said he wasn't authorized to even discuss it until it is released. I asked him if there was a release date, and he (apologetically) said there is no release date that he was authorized to reveal.
So... is it coming out May 19 or not? Why all the mystery? -
According to their website, it should be. HP Expands Design Leadership with Updated Consumer Notebook PC Portfolio
-
No company wants to go on a full advertising information blitz about their new lineup while they still need to sell the current lineup. The new design is superior to the current one in both thickness, style, and materials. No, no there is no reason to shine a spotlight on the new series just yet.
-
2 more days! hopefully a review comes out soon.
-
It is definitely coming out on the May 19th.
-
Add one more to that list ... the new DV3. I5-520M/HD5450 in a 13.3" brushed aluminum case. If you don't need a 5650 for gaming this little aluminum unit will do just fine.
HP Pavilion dv3-4000 Entertainment Notebook PC series specifications - HP Home & Home Office products
If you're really in need of power, you can get the DV3 with an I7-720QM.

-
When does that come out? I don't see it listed on the press release at all.
-
Actually, that notebook has only been released in Singapore, you can see it listed on the top right corner. Best idea would be to wait for the dm4 to release on Wednesday. I'm in the same boat as many of the people here, looking for a good, cheap computer for college.
-
You got that right ... if you need a computer now, the DM4 is a good option for a student who doesn't need the specs of an envy 14. The DV3 is not available in the states yet. It will probably make its way to the US over the summer. If you want a 13.3" and are in no hurry, it might be worth a bit of a wait. It is interesting looking - no?

why would they offer the dm4 with 720qm but not 540m...?
-
dm4 is up on amazon! Amazon.com: HP Pavilion dm4-1060us 14.1-Inch Laptop: Electronics
-
dang just intel hd graphics on that guy^
-
$849.99? Why the higher price tag than the base price of 729.99? What's the difference?
-
Thats a good point...only possible difference I see is 4GB ram, but that's usually a $50.00 upgrade, I guess the fignerprint reader probably isn't standard?
-
nah i think the fingerprint reader will be on it, I don't see hp taking that out of the base model, they would need to build a chassis without the reader. I'm thinking probably the ram and hard drive? maybe base is like a 320gb 5400rpm and 2 gb ram? on the amazon list, is that the base core i5 they said it would come with?
