    Here we go.
I bought this laptop from Costco, with every option, except the TV tuner. I opened it up, charged the battery, read the manual and noticed the only included CD's being an AOL cd and a DVD lightscribe disk. I pressed the power button, and waited about 5 minutes for it to be booted up, bombarded by numerous software trials and advertisements. I wasn't going to take that!
I reformatted the disk and reinstalled my own version of XP. However, it wouldnt recognize the SATA hard drive, so I had to disable it. After installing Windows, I put the drivers from online on a cd and tried to load them. Every one failed, and the computer lagged horribly.
I contacted HP and asked for a full recovery disk. They sent me an OS cd, which I installed, but only left me in the same spot.
I contacted them again, and they said I would recieve a drivers cd in the mail. The next morning I got it in the mail. However, it was no drivers CD! It was a Microsoft Encarta 2005 Trial disk... Um ok...
I contacted them again, and then they said they would send me a recovery DVD...finally.

As I was waiting, I turned on the computer to see if I could troubleshoot some issues. The CD reading is slow. Without the AC plugged in, the screen is extremely dull, below long usability. The computer is slow and sporatic. The touchpad is jittery. You barely press on the back of the screen and it makes waves all over the LCD. The keyboard flexes way too much. Some buttons wouldnt light up. Overall, its not worth 2000 bucks. By far. I was sitting there amazed by the horrible screen and watching the battery percentage decreasing 1% every 25 seconds. And I wasnt doing anything.

FORTUNATELY, I bought it from Costco and was able to return this ugly behemoth. I cant wait to order my Acer travelmate 8200 now. :)

    not just opinion.

    Sorry to hear that,
but you shouldn't bought this kind of
cr@ps at the first place. Also, Costco
is not a place for High Tech as well....

    OK, Learn from this lesson....!

Return it perhaps...and get a new one. Maybe its broken. There are many users that have there dv5000 working perfectly :).

Btw in my view the HP is better then the Acer.
    Good Luck.

    Why not Costco?
It's Costco that made it so easy to return. Lets see you do that with mail order.

    REALLY?

Well, if you know of another retailer that'll save me $260 plus tax off of HP's site, AND give me six months return option, along with refunding my shipping charges, please let me know.

Personally, I don't know of another retailer I'd rather purchase from.

You may not be happy with the Acer either. Very flexie lid, not the best display. Have you checked out the Fujitsu dual cores...nice, especially the display.

I also have a Dv 5000t and like the 6 month return policy. Does anyone no if HP will send just a drivers disk I also would like to just put the operating system on without all the junk and do away with the recovery drive D. On Hp website they do not have all the drivers listed. The sata driver seems to be a problem.

You might need to call Dell support for those drivers, and see if they can e-mail them.

How are you satisfied with your dv5000 other then the hassle of reinstalling OS?
I realize that there are probably more well built laptops out there, but they also would have cost quite a bit more (Levono, Sony) As long as the Pavillion isn't really junk, I'll be happy.

I have a dv1000t that's being shipped to me, I just haven't received it yet.

    thanks

I have a dv5000z and mine works perfectly. I don't have any of the problems you listed above specifically, except for being able to see waves if I press *hard* on the lid. The screen is bright and crisp (I have the matte screen, not BrightView) even on battery, and the computer is extremely fast. I have the 2.0 GHz Turion, 1GB RAM, and the 5200RPM disk. If you tell Costco you should be able to get a replacement computer. If not, fight for it and make sure to list everything wrong with it. If you read the reviews on that computer, you'll find that yours is definitely sub-par to what it should be. I'd definitely give the computer a second try, though. It's really a good notebook.

denmick, you may be able to buy a recovery CD for $10 for your model. You should check with customer support (you can even use the online support option).

She,Z5sharp, I like the 5000t over the 5000z because the 12 volt battery lasted two hours longer in the t vs the z. The usb ports on the left side up and down are weak and when I did have the 5000z and was using the tv tuner pluging it in and out, the usb ports broke and I had another notebook the R 4000 that ran very hot and was told to send it back. The battery life on that one with the 12 volt battery was only 3 and half hours same as the 5000z . The 5000t is 5 hours and 45 minutes. My 5000t the battery is loose and moves around when I carry it. It also came from the factory with a stripped screw on the cover of the memory and the post that holds that screw to the cover is broke. Hp will not let me by online anymore because I returned two notebooks that support told me to return. So I saw costco sell them and i bought the 5000t
So I do not think tech support will be to happy to send me any disc. \
The other day I posted a excellent deal on a dell e1505 at cosco for 1399.00.
That would be the notebook if i was to by one today.

The Dv1000t is a real nice machine, as long as you're not asking it to run high end games (with it's intergrated graphics) you should be very happy with it.

Well to catch up with the thread again, Costco didnt give me any hassle at all about the laptop. They took it back without a problem and I was happy to see my problems leave me.

I went to CompUSA and looked at all the laptops lined up. I believe toshiba has the nicest screen out there, and Acer has the nicest keyboard/ergonomics. Also, the specs on the Acer 8204 exceed the HP 5000, and from PCNation, it is 20 dollars cheaper!

As for the Acer screen giving a lot of flex, I doubt carbon fiber will give any granted it is real carbon fiber. I have held a tube of pure carbon fiber made from one layer of the material, and it i as strong as steel it seems, and light as a feather.

I found the reason for me returning the HP is not so much the fact that it "sucked", but that it didnt meet my expectations for a 2 thousand dollar computer. I am either going to order the Acer 8204 or the Acer 4674 tomorrow.

As for the acer matte screen being bad, I saw one on a 4200, and it is flawless. Bright and crisp in my eyes. The HP must have had a polarized film over it that makes the shiny screen contrast unevenly even at a direct viewing angle. I found that quite annoying.

Maybe this will influence you buying the HP or not, but if you buy any computer, Costco is a great way to have a peace of mind. :)

Bummer. I've had my dv5000t and it's worked great. Sreen is nice, looong battery life, and fast. Keyboard is still taking some getting used to since it's different from my desktop, but otherwise I can't really complain. But, at least Costco was good with the return.
