Hi i have just got of ebay a reasonably priced HP G70, which needed the LCD supports repairing (My mig welder sorted them out) and a new back piece. Apart from that its working fine, needs a new battery but that will come in time.
I like the Nvidia graphics and blu ray player and HDMI out will be great for connecting up to my telly in the bedroom.

There is one problem its darn hot.
It has a T5800 processor 3GB ram and standard 160gb Hardrive. I like a little bit of Warcraft and this machine will play it obviously not all bells and whistles but it like burns up.
I have Speedfan on at the moment and whilst idling and surfing internet i get temps of GPU 52 HDD 53 and core 1 and 0 at 20. I will play some warcraft and put some more temps on. But the CPU seems very high for idle?
Is there something i should be looking at?

I am also thinking of a Processor upgrade I have a T5800 in at the moment what thought are ther on going for a T9400 i think the onboard Cache would help. Then its onto Hard drive 160GB is a bit small I would go for Scorpio Caviar Black or the new Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive. Any thoughts.

What i really want to know is has anyone got this thing running cool?

Well playing warcraft have GPU at 92 hdd at 67 and core 0 and 1 at 20 but i have two other temp readings which maybe CPU?? they are 70 and 72

Are you sure the GPU is going up to 92 in Warcraft? None of the other temperatures you listed are actually hot.

I got the temps using the Speedfan program unless the program is reading the temps wrong. But it is very very hot to touch.

well took the lappy to bits and the cooler was clogged with dust so that brought GPU down to 77 when playing Warcraft.

It feels much cooler now.. the thermal pads on the chips are they any good or is it better to use artic silver?

Sometimes the pads are thick and ensure there's contact between chip and heatsink. If you remove the pad and apply thermal paste instead you might have small gap between the sink and chip: result is burnt chip.

So check first if there's a gap when pad is missing...

I agree that this laptop had a very high spec for the price (I got two at promotion prices in it's last UK Christmas / New Year sale from PC World / Currys in the UK, having 17" screen, webcam, Blue-ray for a couple of hundred pounds less than I expected. Bought 2, one for brother-in-law, one for son. Brother-in-law doesn't use his much, prefers his desktop, but son used his everyday, like a 25=year old would, and in less than 3 years the top (screen/lid) came off, the cause being broken screen hinge brackets (on both sides) Needed new screen hinges, front & back bezels (the black plastic surround to the screen is front & the lid-top is the back!) & a new screen (when it fell off, liquid crystal bled into the screen display). There are lots of these for sale on e-bay 'for sale or repair' which seem to have or will have this problem, just look for description which indicates laptop OK but 'only' a hinge is broken or lower front screen bezel (left, right or both!) is separating; the screen hinge is breaking or has broken & the screw pulls the plastic holder off the back bezel, separating front from back. Would have repaired it, but screen hinge too flimsy, so fault would recur with regular / heavy use, so used HDD & RAM in older Compaq nx7300 (more robust, as a 'corporate' model)! Brother-in -laws is OK, but used very occasionally (less than weekly). Hinge looks to be aluminium, which fatigues, & being very thin it broke just above twist below screen itself on both sides.

bracket for LCS is a ferrous metal (its magnetic) so mig welded together. I brought one of the ones with a bust lid, the screen being fine. It is a good lappy needs keeping cool though which leads to the broken bits.
I have a t9400 and a new cooling material and Diamond cooling paste.
