Sounds like you possibly have a problem with the lcd display. You you have a lose lcd cable connection that runs to the motherboard. You could try to boot the computer to the BIOS. If you can see video here, you might have a problem with software in windows. You mentioned that you have a working display if you plug it into an external monitor, this proves that the video card is functional. Again, if you see no video in the BIOS you probably have a lcd problem and usually they have to replace the entire "lcd kit" to fix that.

    Good luck

Alright, did you try rotating through the display modes? (Hit Fn+F4...I think...to do that. Hit it a few times every few seconds with the external monitor plugged in an the notebook LCD open and see if that helps.)

Even if the LCD cable was loose, that doesn't explain the external monitor not working (unless the mode wasn't correct as per my first paragraph).

Sadly enough though, it does sound like the video card might have fried itself. If that is the case, then it took the laptop with it...but we'll try to exhaust all the possibilities first!

Hi, I'm having a similar problem with my dv5000. Every once in a while, quite often in the past week or so, the screen won't display things right. It happens whenever the screen turns on (at startup, or right before the welcome screen, or after being in standby) The colors are there, but it's all just sqiggly lines on a solid colored background that move around when I move the cursor. Usually if I force my computer off and start it back up everything goes back to normal, but the last time took me about ten restarts, each time starting out with a black screen with white lines (instead of the white hp logo). What's causing this? Is something loose or something wrong with my video card?
