A while ago I sold my mum my nc8230.

My bro borrowed it for his work and it "magically stopped working" today. At home I powered it on and it asked for smart card securtiy thing and I managed to get into the bios and disable it.

About 5 minutes later, the laptop was restarted by my mom and now the screen does not power on, though the notebooks fan, hdd and power led are on.

Any suggestions? As I have already taken a look at the LCD Ribbon cable and it is firmly in place. i have also reset the CMOS (or RTC) battery.

Have you tried connecting an external display?

Try running without battery, and then battery only. You can also try removing the RAM, one at a time, or replace it if possible.
Have you ever cleaned the laptop on the inside, and removed dust in the heatsink? Can it be overheating? Apply new thermal paste on CPU and GPU? Mine was full of dust after only 15 months.

I'm not sure what else I'd do if it happened to me. :/

I have tried to run with and without battery : no luck
I have tried removing one of the ram sticks : booted slightly more often
I have cleaned the inside of the laptop every month : I have cats, what do you expect :D
I have applied new thermal paste on the processor about 3 or 4 months ago : OCZ Freeze (the blue one)
