when you try to boot it gets stuck on the pre-window's Welcome screen and you continuously hear a scratching noise and a recurring beep, I loaded Knoppix and it works fine so I am sure it's a HDD issue? What can I do from here, can i run a CHKDSK anyhow? Or what else can I try please?

There should be a HD test option in the BIOS. You could use Spinrite to diagnose and attempt to repair the HD long enough to backup your data but it's $90 last I checked.

Have you tried booting into Safemode yet (start hitting F8 when the computer boots and it will bring up the safemode options)? If not give that a try and run checkdisk, there might be some problems with either the filesystem or the registry. Let me know what happens.
