was working fine, left it for a few and when I returned, no video, hooked up an external monitor and still no video, don't have a spare inverter board or video card to swap, any other test I can run to determine the problem?

First, try shutting everything off, remove the AC adapter and battery, then hold down the power button for several seconds. Reattach the battery/AC and try powering up.
Check whether there is an image on the built-in screen. If there is an image but the screen is dark, then either your inverter or backlight (or both) need to be replaced.
If not, then hook up the external monitor and make sure you press the function key combination (sorry, I don't remember it offhand and I don't have my DV1000 with me to check) to switch the video to the external screen. Note that a bad inverter will not affect an external monitor as the inverter only provides power to the backlight of the built-in screen.
If the external monitor works but the built-in screen doesn't, the problem could be the screen itself or the cables. Try reseating the video and inverter cables. This will require removal of the screen bezel and the button panel between the keyboard and screen. Detailed instructions are available from the service manual, which can be found on HP's website under "Support and Drivers." The cables may have a break in them from flexing or if they got pinched somewhere. If you have an ohmmeter, check the cables for continuity. If the cables are ok you probably need a new screen.
If neither the internal nor the external monitor work, the motherboard will need to be replaced. The "video card" is integrated onto the motherboard and can't be replaced separately.
Another thing to check (with power off and battery out), open up the access panels on the bottom and make sure your rams and wifi card are securely plugged in. -
Yes, I can see the images on the screen, it is very faint and dark.

The person who lives next to me in my dorm building had this problem...he ended up having to send the notebook to HP for repair...they replaced the video cable to the LCD I believe...not sure though

It's probably a busted LCD inverter. You can get used inverters off eBay for fairly cheap. Here's a fairly good generic walkthrough:
Screen inverter replacement
You probably didn't hit Fn-F4 to toggle the external display on when you plugged in your external monitor. Try that again. -
Yes the external monitor is showing fine
-
well at least you narrowed down your problem now...

Try reseating the cables first. If you're very lucky that will fix it.
If you're not so lucky, the problem is either the inverter or backlight. I would try replacing the inverter first. -
To replace the inverter cable or board is fairly easy, to replace the backlight will entail paying someone to do it. Tell me this please, is there a "universal" cable and inverter board which I can purchase to test ANY laptop in the future so I will know for sure whether or not it's the backlight?

Yes, guys, it was the inverter, replaced it, problem solved, really appreciate the help all, thanks!!

The LCD cable could be broken. Usually that includes the inverter cable. I can't think of anything else you could try?

thank you again
