Hello. My friend has recently given me this 15.6 inch HP Pavilion dv5 Entertainment PC. He didnt have the manual for the laptop and its about 5 years old. It had 2gb of RAM but one of the 1gb RAM sticks went bad and I received this laptop with 1gb DDR2 RAM which makes the laptop very slow.

My questions is what is the maximum amount of RAM I can install into this laptop? It has 2 RAM slots.

And where can I find a laptop manual for this Pavilion dv5 entertainment pc?

The hard drive is fine, came with a 320gb hard drive. And it came with Windows Vista Operating System, which is very slow, but I think everything is slow cause of low RAM.

Anyways any help would be great.

Yes, definitely purchase more RAM if you can right now - prices are very low.

Your notebook can definitely take 8 GB (2x4GB) worth of DDR3 SODIMMs.

Are you sure it can handle DDR3? I did some research as well and one link said the ram that comes standard is a DDR2 800 (PC2 6400). If I can use DDR3 than I will boost this to 4gb ram right away. I dont need much.

Oops -- sorry about that. You mentioned that it used DDR2 memory which makes this a first-run dv5 (1XXX series).

DDR2 is currently more expensive than DDR3, but it's still affordable. I recommend purchasing a 4 GB DDR2 PC2-6400 SODIMM kit (2x2GB) - most brands with a lifetime warranty are recommended including Corsair, Patriot / PDP Systems, Crucial, Mushkin, and G.Skill.
