I bought an HP pavillion about a year and a half... about three months ago it started having some issues when starting, it would just not start... well, last night was the last time it did... my computer is dead!!
I talked to someone on HP online and they said it sounds like it is the motherboard... I refuse to accept that diagnostic...

Anyway, what happens is that when I hit the power button all the lights turn on as if it was starting but nothing else happens, it tries to run the dvd but nothing else... I can't hear the fan going off or anything... then it just sits there with the lights on but nothing on the screen. I have tried reseting the RAM and draining the battery and still nothing, ideas? help!!

Sounds like your motherboard is dead....

Hate to say it but sounds like the HP tech was actually right lol

I've had motherboards go in HP notebooks and thats exactly what happens. Sometime it's all of a sudden others over time.

One thing you can try is to remove the battery and unplug the notebook then hold the power button down for 30 seconds or so then try starting it. If that doesn't work then you should probably just look at getting a new notebook or bring it in to a tech shop or HP. Chances are if it's the motherboard for sure it will be a lot cheaper to just buy a new lappy.

    Best of luck.

Sounds like a corrupt BIOS to me. HP tech will say motherboard because the BIOS chip is solidered to the board. Could possibly be either.

Either way if the BIOS chip is corrupt then he would need a new motherboard...

    Try this:

    1) Take out the battery, remove the AC adapter.
    2) Open notebook, hold power button for 60 seconds. Just hold it down, firmly...as in if you're trying to turn the notebook on.
    3) Plug in JUST the AC adapter into the notebook.
    4) Try turning it on.
    5) If it doesn't work, try again...but hold down the button for 120 seconds. If it does work, shut down and put the battery back in and try to boot normally.

    Anything?

Try what Airman and Greg suggest, and then I ask if you never used Hibernation or had it disabled? I have a DV8120ca from 2 years ago and it did exactly what you did from day one, I had to take the battery out and hold the power button. That helped until the next day....until I disabled Hibernation. I wonder if you had it disabled and its reneabled. I had a thread about that, if there was an update specific in the last two years.

I should add that my lights came on too, and nothing else.

    good afternoon,

this looks like an old thread, hoprfully it will get viewed.
I have a hp pavillion dv2715nr with the exact same issues. I will note that it has been returned to HP 3 TIMES..... First time theu reseated the hd and ram.... the second time they rplaced the motherboard..... the third time i was told that "they could not reproduce the condition that I am experiencing"

I bought this new in March of 2008. now we are in October....
I have tried all the tasks that are listed to get this thing to go to no avail...

anyone who wants this pos is more than welcome to it. you have a t least three month of ****ty waranty left.

I would contact HP and immediatly ask for a case manager and provide that person with the documentation/case numbers for the previous repairs showing you reporting the same problem each time. Most companies as part of their limited warranty include a 3 strike lemon policy. The catch here would be the third repair, but that is why I suggest immediately asking for a case manager as they will have the most power, whatever that is, to try help you possibly get it replaced with a new PC.

    update:

contacted a case manager.... finally. I guess I should preface this by saying that I documented everything from start to finnish. I have it all and HP does too.

I was given three choices, first was to send it back for repairs... not an option in my opinion.

Second, they offered to buy it back for a percentage slightly above half the paid value, in the insurance industry this is reffered to as "betterment". I think not.

Third, exchange it for a new one that is similar in configuration. Yep I'll go with that. :) for the amount of money that I would of gotten back, I think exchanging it was the way to go for me. New notebook with a new waranty.... I'll roll the dice with HP again.

I guess it can't be stressed enough that keeping good records of everything is invaluable.

Thanks for the help from all that have posted!

    Just an update......

well, it is now the 10th of Nov. I originally contacted a case manager on the 20th of October. They recieved my reciept and the specs for the new laptop which when I put the specs together I wasn't a pig at all, I think I was being most fair on the system that I put together. I didn't go for all the bells and whistles but I didn't keep it plain jane either. We are now entering the third week of the case manager zone. I am being told that she has the specs that I would like but hasn't had the time to compare and contrast them... ect... ect.... "I will call or email with what we will offer you by next week" That was two weeks agao...... a few more calls... and finally I got to speak to her... same rhetoric.... getting real old now..... I will say this, that I have been extreemly nice to them throughout all of this... thinking that just maybe this will pay off for me. Ever seen that movie the "Rain Maker"? I'm getting the feeling that HP is the big old insurance company that just puts off payment untill you die.... or something like that.

Anyway still waitng, from threads that I have read contacting corporate... or any other level is useless. what a country.

had the same issue after i did a brute shutdown or wtever u call it .. i removed battery and pressed the power button for a while and it worked .. the man from hp told me it was static build up and the process is called "static drain . or battery drain" .. he also told me to hook it to an external monitor coz it might be graphic card issues .. if it's not this or that then it's the motherboard

sorry bro .. the best thing u can do is get a new lappy coz a motherboard will almost be half the price of the whole lappy :(

    *hug* ?
