Can I buy any wireless n card for my laptop or dose it haft to be a certain one?

By PCI you mean the PCMCIA or PC express card slot or the internal mini PCI solt? If it is the internal one then HP is known to have a bios whitelist(not sure of the very latest ones) allowing only HP certified wifi cards to be used with the system. So, in such a case only certain HP sold specifically for the model of your laptop will work. If it is the esternal card slots then any compatible wifi card should work.

I was looking to buy an internal pci card. I wonder if the Intel 5300 is on the whitelist?

Well, the bios locks out based on the PCI ID of the wifi card, not the brand model numbers. So, even if on paper it supports the Intel 5300, it will only support a specific one based on the PCI ID of the card HP specified for the laptop.
Which hp model laptop do you have, the newer ones I am not sure if there is a bios lockout but the older ones sure did(dv9000 era)? -
Dv 7 1135nr

Thats one of the newer ones. A quick search of the web revealed this(on a dv7-1175nr)....
